Review: When the lab where Bri works as a virologist gets taken over by terrorists she feels betrayed when she recognizes one of the guys (it doesn't help that she's still attracted to him despite the fact that he acts like a smug turd most of the time). She's forced to choose between her own survival and her ideals (or more like her pride) when she eventually realizes there's been a nasty conspiracy going on in the company she's worked at for the past 2 yrs. Meanwhile, an insidious flu epidemic has been sweeping across the country...

This book was a lot more entertaining than i expected it to be and the audio version has a pretty good narrator. About 90% of the book takes place at Bri's work, where she's been taken hostage by terrorists which is why i expected a boring start to a (possibly romantic) zompoc series but I actually found it interesting to see how the situation played out (not really how i expected).

For the most part, the author managed to keep it fresh and the characters don't act like cookie cutter stereotypes; i liked them (or at least didn't find them obnoxious) but some of the secondary and tertiary characters in this book seemed unrealistic and one dimensional to me. Bri's coworkers for instance, most to the time you wouldn't even know they were there until the author would mention their existence and usually their reactions (or rather, their complete LACK of reaction) just wasn't believable. The villain of the book in particular seemed unrealistic with the way he would "bait" Bri (such juvenile and blatant sexual harassment and no one contradicts him?) and supposedly he has only one goal in mind despite such a precarious situation? But whatever, a little drama can make a book interesting.

Initially, Bri's love interest really annoyed me because he seemed a bit too one-dimensional and flat in that his only response to anything was to grin smugly, laugh, or smile. Bri's gonna get raped? He just laughs--no wait, scratch that, on top of finding it amusing he apparently tries to egg her would-be rapist on even more?! Bri was almost strangled to death? He just smiles smugly. He was often so cold and smug that at times, I couldn't help despising Bri for being attracted to him, but I have to admit it kept me reading... I mean, he couldn't possibly be that horrible could he? Would he ever be able to redeem himself? I actually think the fact that the author got me to hate him at times made it more compelling (though i often hated her for it). I was also glad that the romance didn't take over the whole story.

On a pickier note I will say that I thought the writing was okay with the only problem for me being the overuse of the expressions "it was beyond me why [insert anything here]" and "[insert anything here] was beyond me" (many many things are "beyond" our MC). I rarely, if ever, complain about crap like this but the repeated use of trite expressions such as "my mind screamed at me to do this" "my brain screamed at me to do that," "everything in me screamed at me to do whatever" also became pretty distracting (referring to one’s brain in the third person so often just sounds weird). That said, i doubt anyone cares but me and the book was entertaining (my mind screamed at me to buy the sequel) so I rounded up to 4 stars.

Review: Just FYI: there are minor "spoilers" in this review, but nothing a reader shouldn't be able to figure out as they are reading. Anyway, I just finished the 4th book of this series so this is more a general review to give you an idea if this is ZA fiction you want to commit to. And overall, I say yes, this is really a very good, if not excellent, series. Given that the author is a scientist, it is definitely more science oriented. That's a good thing to me and sets this book apart from a lot of the military oriented books from former military authors. She takes on a lot of questions and issues about a zombie outbreak that authors without her knowledge and skill set don't (or can't), and she does so in a believable way. Fortunately, it does NOT devolve into techno-babble and explains things in pretty layman terms.

She is less strong on weapons and tactics compared to some other ZA authors I've read, but that's hardly surprising given that many of them are former military and that's their wheelhouse. I also think she was mainly focused in these early books on the main character and her group, as there is not a lot on how the military-industrial complex survived. It is there and hinted at, but always in the shadows. We really only see one (partial) Army company and a couple of mine-clearing tanks through the first 4 books. It seems clear she is coming around to a "bigger picture" in Books 5 and 6 so that's a good way to "wrap-in" larger military operations if she now has a better handle on it.

Character development is overall very good for the two main characters. The main characters transformation from diminutive lab scientist to SF operator in a trial by fire is a great part of the storyline. And really, isn't that what we want to see in ZA fiction? A compelling character who does what she has to in order to survive? Character development of secondary and tertiary characters I overall rate as a weaker part of the books. We have characters who have been with the group since Book 1, and except for really one (Martinez), I don't know a lot about these other characters. Each of these characters (Andrej, Burns, Bailey, Pia, etc.) had a reason for getting involved in the super-soldier program, but I don't feel like I know much more about them than they are just "hard core operators." There has got to be some motivation and back-story there that is worth exploring. Maybe it will happen in Book 5 and 6. Would've liked it to have happened earlier.

Overall, I give Book 1 a 4 star rating. The books over time develop a 5 star rating for me, especially Book 4 which ends on a cliffhanger that I look forward to seeing how the author resolves (because it seems unresolvable without a good bit of the "sciency stuff"). So, grab this book, or the series... I'd buy these books at 3 times the price if they were only available in hard copy, and that's one of my general "ratings" of how good these e-books are.

Review: Juvenile dialogue put me off the book at first and the author’s idea of “romance” was definitely repellant however the pacing and general storyline kept me curious enough to read til the end. Not sure if I’ll continue the series though.
