Review: I’m an exercise instructor and lead Senior Fitness classes for the last two decades. I see this book as written for someone to have a personal guide to achieve a good fitness routine, especially if they also join Dr. Su’s online community. The exercises are classic moves in any good Physical Therapists toolkit, and good for everyone at any age. However, I think Seniors thrive in community, and without community fall off in caring for themselves as they might. I’m certain that a Care Giver could benefit from reading this book and helping their client.

Review: I am using this book now and finding it useful.
I found the author's credentials reassuring. He sounds like a very knowledgable Physical Therapist. PT's often know more than doctors about which exercises are best for certain conditions.
In addition to describing the exercises, the author covers other issues to help you achieve your physical goals, like the importance of eating enough protien when engaging in a muscle-strengthening program, and how to overcome mental resistance to starting the program.
Again, it's a useful book for strengthening weak legs &/or increasing your balance.
The only drawback is that, like with all exercises, they only work if you do them.

Review: I like EVERYTHING about the book and highly recommend the spiral bound option for reading versatility (one hand or none). The larger font and layout of the chapters makes it easy to read. Also, Dr. Su explains everything in easy to understand terms and tells you exactly what to do, when to do it, how to do it and why it’s important that we (as seniors) do. I was very encouraged about the approximate time frame of 2 weeks to expect to see (and feel) the changes as a result of following the plan. Also, the book can be read in a very short period of time since it’s only 200 pages. Dr. Su lets you know what to expect each step of the way and is very encouraging. He even offers his email to contact him if you have any questions or difficulties (how many authors do THAT?).
I just finished reading the book and I’m SO excited to get started with the 6-Minute Fitness At 60+ plan. I KNOW this will work me and I’m looking forward to feeling (and looking) healthier. It’s never too late for that.

Review: When I became a physical therapist 7 years ago I quickly noticed something surprising - there becomes a huge gap in physical abilities in patients over the age of ~55. I would have some patients who were 55-65+ and running 5Ks and half marathons. Then I'd have another patient who was 56 being wheeled into the clinic in a wheelchair by a child who could barely stand, would easily get out of breath, and couldn't take care of themselves. The difference? Neither person usually had any serious medical condition, though both patients tended to have most of the same diagnoses of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, chronic pain, etc. But what stuck out to me was the attitude and perspective. The patient wanting to run that next week had the attitude of "Yeah, it hurts a little but that's just how it is" whereas the patient in the wheelchair tended (not always!) to be more like, "It hurts when I move so I just sit here and watch TV".

I fully believe that by our 50s-60s we become the sum of the millions of tiny, seemingly small, and insignificant decisions that we've made over the course of our life. Do you exercise or watch TV? Watch what you eat or survive on fast food?

I like Dr. Su's (not Seuss!) book because he presents the research along with the plan. It sounds crazy to so many patients when I tell them that they should be exercising even if it hurts. The challenge for PTs and patients alike is finding exercises that are appropriate at different levels of ability.

I think this book has a great, realistic plan. If you follow it, start with Level I or II and then progress as able. If you are in excellent shape and find that it becomes too easy I recommend adding 1-2 full-body exercises like squats or step-ups with weight on your back to add to the routines.

On the other hand, if chronic pain, arthritis, and other conditions have stopped you from exercising in the past, I implore you - do something! It's hard, I know. But answer this question - would you rather fall asleep at night being sore thinking of all you accomplished OR fall asleep at night thinking about how bad things are and how everything hurts no matter what?

No matter our age or anything, we all need to be able to move. The saddest situations that I've come across in my practice have been when a relatively young person (in their 50s) sat down in a chair and was too weak to stand back up. Both times could have been prevented. That's much too young to be like that. Never let that happen to you! Exercise for as long as possible and you'll learn to love the endorphins - they're legal! ;) Good luck!

Review: You know when you're looking for a particular thing on Amazon, but get distracted by all the other stuff they show you? You end up thinking you've done your research, but somehow you missed a vital piece of information such as "6 minutes a day." I used the Look Inside feature for this book and was intrigued by the chapter about how walking isn't the best exercise. Since I'd begun to think so myself, I was intrigued and bought the book.

The info Dr. Su included in the book is pretty good stuff--especially the walking chapter; it explained what I was experiencing. The book reads a bit like an info-mercial, only not quite so annoying. Despite the near-elementary level writing (which probably appeals to some people) it's informative. About the exercise section--I liked that you could skip right on to Level III if you were already in good shape. But when I realized this was only a 6-minute program that you perform twice a day for... the rest of your life? I quickly realized I would die of boredom by Day 2 or 3 (problem solved, I guess). I like to work out in the weight room, take fitness classes, swim, dive, and even walk! Problem with this book: no variety, ergo, very short product lifespan. Recommended for entry level exercisers, but not for intermediate-to-advanced or those in it for the long haul.
