Fünf US-Marines und ein Navy-Sanitäter hissen im Feburar 1945 während der blutigen Schlacht um die japanische Pazifikinsel Iwo Jima eine amerikanische Flagge auf dem Berg Suribachi. Die Fotografie geht um die Welt und die US-Regierung setzt sie zu Propagandazwecken ein, als Sinnbild für den ungebrochenen amerikanischen Siegeswillen. Drei der abgelichteten Soldaten überleben letzten Endes und werden von der Front abgezogen. John "Doc" Bradley, der Indianer Ira Hayes und Rene Gagnon ziehen daraufhin als "Kriegshelden" durch die Heimat. Nach außen hin spielen sie ihre Rolle perfekt und sorgen für neue Hoffnung bei den Daheimgebliebenen. Doch die Geschichte, die der Bevölkerung erzählt wird, ist eine andere, wie sie sich im Pazifikkrieg wirklich abgespielt hat und die drei Heimkehrer wählen innerlich ganz unterschiedliche Wege, um mit den Geschehnissen fertig zu werden.
