Rohit Sharma’s T20I career is one of the most remarkable journeys in Indian cricket. From being a young batter in India’s squad for the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup to lifting the trophy as captain in 2024, Rohit experienced nearly every stage of the format’s evolution.

His 19-year T20I journey ended with a memorable title triumph in Barbados, completing a unique chapter that began with India’s first T20 World Cup victory and concluded with the team winning the trophy again 17 years later.

Rohit Sharma’s T20I Journey Began in 2007

Rohit Sharma made his T20I debut in 2007 and was part of India’s historic campaign at the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa. Despite being a relatively young player, he made an immediate impact during the tournament.

One of his most memorable performances came against South Africa, when he scored an unbeaten 50 to help India reach the semi-finals. In the final against Pakistan, Rohit contributed a quick 30 not out from 16 balls as India posted 157/5 and eventually won the inaugural T20 World Cup.

That tournament established Rohit as part of a generation that helped shape India's T20 cricket.

From Young Batter to India's T20I Leader

Over the following years, Rohit developed into one of India's most destructive white-ball batters. His ability to attack both pace and spin, combined with his timing and six-hitting ability, became central to his T20I batting style.

Rohit also accumulated several significant individual records. In January 2024, he became the first men's T20I batter to score five centuries after producing an unbeaten 121 against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.

His consistency and experience eventually led him to captain India in major T20I tournaments.

The defining moment of Rohit Sharma's T20I legacy arrived in 2024. Selected as India's captain for the T20 World Cup, he led a squad that remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Rohit made a major contribution with the bat, scoring 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70. His standout performance came against Australia in the Super Eight stage, when he smashed 92 from just 41 deliveries. He also scored 57 against England in the semi-final.

India eventually defeated South Africa in the final in Barbados to win their second T20 World Cup title.

A Fitting End to Rohit’s T20I Career

Following India's victory, Rohit Sharma confirmed that the final was his last T20I appearance. His retirement came immediately after he achieved the goal that had remained central to his international career: winning another T20 World Cup for India.

Rohit finished his T20I career with 4,231 runs at an average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 140.89, according to the ICC. He also became one of only a small group of players to feature in both the 2007 and 2024 T20 World Cup-winning campaigns.

Rohit Sharma’s Lasting T20I Legacy

Rohit Sharma's T20I legacy connects two generations of Indian cricket. He entered the format as a young player during its first World Cup and left it as the captain who delivered India's second T20 World Cup title.

His journey included explosive batting, leadership responsibilities, major records and, ultimately, a World Cup triumph. From 2007 to 2024, Rohit's career reflected the growth of T20 cricket itself and established him as one of the defining figures of India's journey in the shortest international format.
