Step 1: Check Your Initial Eligibility Criteria

Before enrolling in ground classes or flight school, ensure you meet the baseline requirements set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA):

• Educational Qualification: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics from a recognized board (or equivalent via NIOS).
  

• Age Limit: Minimum 17 years to start training; 18 years to be issued a Commercial Pilot License.
  

• Medical Fitness: Pass a Class 2 Medical Exam with a DGCA-empaneled doctor (followed by a Class 1 Medical prior to license issuance).
  

Step 2: Master Your Ground Theory Subjects

Flight hours alone won’t make you a pilot — understanding the science behind every maneuver is essential. Clearing the DGCA theory examinations is one of the most critical hurdles for cadet pilots.

You must clear exams in three core subjects:

1. Air Navigation: Maps, flight planning, wind calculations, and instrumentation.

3. Air Regulations: International and Indian aviation laws, airspace classifications, and safety procedures.

Step 3: Accumulate Your 200 Flight Hours

• 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
  

• 20 hours of cross-country flight time.
  

• 10 hours of instrument flight training (flying solely by reference to instruments).
  

• 5 hours of night flying.
  

Many student pilots choose to complete their practical flight training abroad (such as in the USA via FAA certification) due to quicker airtime completion schedules, then convert their license upon returning to India.

Step 4: CPL Conversion & Type Rating

If you complete flight training outside India, you will need to undergo a DGCA CPL Conversion. This involves passing conversion theory papers and completing skill tests in Indian airspace.

After securing your DGCA CPL, the final step toward flying for commercial airlines like IndiGo, Air India, or Akasa Air is obtaining a Type Rating — specialized training for specific commercial jetliners like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.
