UPDATE ON ALLEGED MURDER CASE AT AFOKANG COMMUNITY
The suspects are:
1. Ofofon Philip, Male, 34 years
2. Offiong Promise, Female, 23 years
3. The Cross River State Police Command wishes to provide an update on the alleged murder case reported at Afukan Community, which has recently gained attention online through the circulation of unverified information.
4. On 8th June 2026, at about 7:00 a.m., information was received at Mbukpa Police Division from a correctional officer in the area that members of the community had apprehended two persons suspected to be connected with a murder incident. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.
5. Upon receiving the report, police officers visited the scene and took the two suspects into custody for questioning.
6. Preliminary investigation and a search of the area were conducted. Both suspects denied any knowledge of, or involvement in, any murder. No corpse was found at the reported location. However, traces of blood were observed around a soakaway pit. One of the suspects claimed that the blood observed at the scene was linked to a previous injury sustained on his leg. This claim remains subject to ongoing investigation.
7. The Command wishes to state categorically that, as of the time of this release, no case of murder has been established against the two suspects in our custody. The matter is currently being investigated as a case of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace against the two suspects, while further investigations continue to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the report.
8. The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, has directed a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter to establish the facts and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.
9. The Command therefore urges members of the public, media practitioners, bloggers, and content creators to verify information through official Police channels before publication. The dissemination of unverified information can mislead the public, create unnecessary anxiety, and generate tension within affected communities.
Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
