Ondo State experienced a sustained downpour throughout Friday, June 5, raising fresh concerns over flash flooding in low-lying communities and major urban centers. The rainfall, which began in the morning hours and continued into the night, left several roads waterlogged and disrupted normal activities across parts of the state.
According to meteorological data, Ondo recorded intermittent heavy showers with humidity levels reaching 96% and temperatures ranging between 24°C and 29°C. Afternoon periods saw the heaviest spells, with forecasts warning of “rain” and “heavy showers” across the state.
In towns like Onyin Akoko and Eleyowo, expert forecasts had earlier flagged reduced visibility and thunderstorm development, urging residents to prepare for unstable weather conditions. While no official casualty or displacement figures have been released as of press time, residents in flood-prone areas of Akure and Ondo City reported overflowing drainages and slow-moving traffic.
The downpour comes amid seasonal warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, which had projected increased rainfall across southwestern states through the mid-year period. Last year, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa alongside the National Emergency Management Agency conducted impact assessments following similar flooding in Ondo City.
Community leaders are now appealing to the state government to clear blocked water channels and activate emergency response teams ahead of predicted rains this weekend. Today’s forecast shows light rain continuing with an 82% humidity level and thunderstorms likely by evening.
Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads, secure their property, and report emergencies to local authorities.
This is a developing weather situation. VENTERTODS MAGAZINE will provide updates as more information becomes available.
