Governor Otu’s Vision for a Green and Sustainable Cross River State

March 18, 2025
Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu is leading a bold and forward-thinking agenda to position Cross River State as a model for sustainable development. His vision for a green economy is rooted in the belief that economic growth and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand, ensuring long-term prosperity while safeguarding the state’s rich natural heritage.
Cross River State is naturally endowed with vast resources that align with the principles of a green economy. Its extensive forest reserves serve as vital carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and climate regulation. The state’s fertile land supports organic farming and agroforestry, creating opportunities for sustainable agriculture. With abundant sunlight and rivers, there is immense potential for renewable energy development, particularly in solar power and small-scale hydroelectric projects. Additionally, the state’s rich marine and aquatic ecosystems offer significant prospects for sustainable fisheries and eco-tourism, further boosting the local economy while preserving the environment.
To drive this vision forward, Governor Otu has established the State Green Economy Commission and the State Council on Climate Change, both dedicated to shaping policies that attract green investments, enhance climate resilience, and create new economic opportunities. In addition, the state government has approved the procurement of electric vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles—a move that will not only cut carbon emissions but also lower transportation costs and create jobs in the clean energy sector.
These initiatives are critical in aligning Cross River State with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2060. By implementing sustainable policies and embracing green technologies, the state is taking proactive steps toward a future where economic progress does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.
Governor Otu’s leadership is laying a strong foundation for a sustainable, prosperous, and environmentally responsible Cross River State. With these transformative policies, the state is not only protecting its natural wealth but also ensuring a better quality of life for its people—now and for generations to come.
