BY ETTAH EMMANUEL O. The 2024 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship is set to kick off from August 31 to September 8 at the U.J. Esuene Sports Stadium in Calabar, Cross River State. This crucial second division tournament will see 19 teams competing intensely for a coveted spot in the NWFL Premiership, while also fighting to avoid relegation to the third division.

The Championship will be structured into four groups—A, B, C, and D—ensuring a highly competitive environment as teams battle through the group stages. The competition will commence with eight matches at two different venues on August 31 and another set of eight matches on September 1. Following the first two days of action, teams will enjoy a rest day on September 2 before resuming with eight matches on September 3 and September 4.

A second rest day will follow on September 5, after which Matchday Five will be held on September 6. The final Matchday Six, on September 8, will be crucial as it will feature four simultaneous matches at two venues to finalize promotion and relegation outcomes.

The stakes are high, with only the top two teams advancing to the NWFL Premiership, while two teams face relegation to the third division. The 2024 NWFL Championship promises to deliver thrilling football and intense competition as teams strive to secure their places in Nigeria’s premier women’s football league.
