Review: This is one of the nicest crochet pattern books ever. The majority of the items are made with fine or super fine yarn weights. They will take longer to make than the average crochet pattern. Most crochet pattern books brag that you can “make it fast.” My feeling is, “make it fast, wear it never.” Who wants to wear something heavy and clunky, with no drape and no style? Not me. The items in this book are things that a real person would actually want to wear and, better yet, be seen in.

Still better, virtually all of the designs are given in a multitude of sizes, from very small to 5x. There’s a size for virtually everyone. It’s nice to see sizes most designers can’t be bothered with. Several of the items are even shown on plus-size models. That is so rare in crochet and knit patterns.

Irrelevant rant number one: I’ve purchased quite a few crochet patterns, magazines and books, only to find the patterns were limited to only a few sizes (Interweave, I mean you).

Irrelevant rant number two: A pattern for a crochet button-down top that I purchased from a different company recently had the audacity to create “sizes” by having one side of the front be one size (extra small), and the other side, crocheted in vertical rows, to be made larger by just adding more rows. The result was for a large-busted woman, the top buttoned straight down, not down the center, but rather awkwardly to the side over a particular portion of her chest, not where one normally places buttons.

End of rants.

The designer, Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby, is to be congratulated for his useful and attractive designs. In the book, he also mentions referring to his website to see additional views of his designs. Visiting his site, I was surprised to see how many of his previous designs I was not only familiar with, but had purchased, never knowing the name of the designer.

In addition to the patterns, there is also an unusually good instructional section on techniques.

Review: I am a long-time fan of Shannon's patterns and design style. This book was the first knit or crochet pattern book that I purchased on pre-order without knowing what any of the designs looked like beforehand, and I definitely do not regret that decision. Once again, Shannon has created a collection of crochet garments and accessories (mainly garments, although there are a couple of accessory collections at the very end of the book) that challenge the notion that you can't make tasteful, contemporary-yet-classic clothing using crochet.

The designs in the book vary in difficulty from basic to advanced, with the majority falling into the intermediate range. The book also features a variety of models with different body types, and most of the garments would be great for the full-figured woman. The patterns also make use of several different yarns in various weights, fibers, and price points, so if you are interested in crocheting from your stash there is bound to be something in here you could make with what you already have.

As a side note, for those who are new to crochet cable construction (which is used a few of the designs in this book), I also highly recommend Shannon's Craftsy class, "Quick and Easy Crochet Cables". He's a great instructor, plus he's just fun to listen to.

Review: I am familiar with the author/designer/creative fiber artist through his appearance on various knitting and crochet programs. He has always impressed me in the extreme. When I saw this book and read the author's summation, it was clear a purchase must be made. Really tired of chunky, chunky, chunky everything, Shannon brings "real" fashion to crochet with lighter weight yarn, creating fabrics and designs that are simply divine. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who crochets and is serious about his or her art. My crochet library consists of 14 books, this being the 15th and absolutely the best in its category. To say I'm glad to have made this purchase is an understatement!

If you don't read patterns, charts are provided, as well are specifications and details regarding what needs to occur with each fashion item in order for it to be the best it can be for you and your size. Also love the section at the back of the book relative to "how to" any number of techniques, which serves to help us all on our way and through garment challenges.

Review: I just got Designer Crochet in the mail, so I don't know as yet how the patterns work up, but I know I always appreciate reading what kinds of patterns I'm going to find in a book. As far as quality goes, all the pieces look like a lot of thought and care went into them. There are stitch charts and construction diagrams, which look pretty helpful. As far as fashion goes, I feel it's a bit of a mixed bag. Some patterns are very cute. I especially like the sweater dress/tunic section, which feels classic but updated/ modern. I got the book when I saw the asymmetrical hoodie, which looks like a neat piece. The cable trio looks fun to wear, the boho skirt is very cute, and a couple of the cardigans are simple and classic enough that I might wear them with more trendy pieces to look up to date. The rest of the pieces, though, feel a bit outdated. All in all, considering how much a pattern costs, and that I like 5 patterns enough to make them without hesitation, it seems like a good value.

Review: I love to make things--it is so meditative and satisfying. The thing is, I'm somewhat mundane about it. This author has taken a domestic craft and turned it into an art form, and this has raised my standards for my own work. The designs in this book are completely different from anything you will see anywhere else. In addition, the book contains many techniques that improve the quality of your work, and it is a tutorial by itself on reading charts and understanding schematics. The designs are extremely fashion forward and interesting--and they demand a lot of you. Just reading this book amplified my (extremely limited) creative impulse and gave me a fresh sense of what is possible in the world of crochet garments.
