Title: Not a Book for Light Entertainment

Review: This book intrigued me just from its content from the beginning. The only other book I read that was written by an ex FBI agent gave a very negative view of a disillusioned agent who joined for the glory of the gold shield, found himself to be too self-important, too underpaid, and not committed to anything that actually required "newbies" to prove themselves. Obviously, he quit to become a CEO where his "talents" would be appreciated...and well reimbursed financially. After that sad, self-inflated view of all the downfalls of an FBI agent, this book immediately intrigued me.

This book did fulfill all my expectations of a devoted and committed agent. Working his way up the ladder of agents, this book is filled with the hard work and fantastic success that makes the generally unappreciating U.S. citizens safe in a country where more and more politicians rule.

This devoted agent will open your eyes to a behind the scenes workings that truly underpaid and underappreciated agents go through to make the U.S. one of the best countries in the world.

But it's not an entertaining book! And as it ends, this book should open your eyes to the political downfall coming to the United States of America.

Title: This is a great read written by an extraordinary FBI Agent.

Review: In this book, Mike McGowan pulls back the curtain and gives the reader a look inside his life growing up, his time as a police officer, and then his legendary career as an FBI Agent. I met Mike on the day he reported to Philadelphia from Quantico. We shared the common experience of coming into the Bureau a little older than most and also from previous employment in local law enforcement. Many of us could tell from the very first day that Mike was going to be "one of the good ones."
I never had the pleasure of working on the same squad as Mike, but I, like many in the office, knew of his excellent work ethic, his prowess as an investigator, his abilities as a SWAT Team member, and of his devotion to his work and to his family. Later, when he was working the three large drug cases he describes in the book, I was in a position wherein I saw inside those cases on nearly a daily basis. I can tell future readers of this book that what Mike describes about those investigations and about his time in Philadelphia is absolutely accurate.
I lost touch with Mike after he went off to Boston to begin his undercover work, however I have no doubt that all that he describes of those years in this book is the unvarnished truth and then some. I commend this book to the reader guaranteeing that you will enjoy the story of this very, very special Special Agent. As it turned out, Mike McGowan was not "one of the good ones," he was light years beyond that.

Review: In a world where the chief executive of the United States of America continuously libels, slanders, and otherwise impugns the reputation of the Department of Justice comes a book spanning the career of a selfless FBI case agent, SWAT member, and public servant whose career has been spent going undercover against some seriously bad guys. Coming off the mean streets of Haverhill, MA, Mike McGowan follows two generations of family into law enforcement and finds his calling at the FBI where he writes the book on undercover operations against the Boston and Russian mobs, the Outlaw motorcycle gang, and even the Sinaloa cartel’s El Chapo himself. This book rivals those of George V. Higgins in terms of the authenticity of underworld language. And yet some of his undercover work pales in comparison when, at the top of his game, McGowan must address office wide suspicions about his integrity and honesty that, while groundless, leave their scars to this day. It is a cliché to say the book reads like a novel but in the midst of the rapid page turning I found myself sitting up to keep reminding myself not only that these were true stories, but McGowan also managed to marry a strong woman who raised and kept a family together that was often in the dark about his activities. Many of us sleep well in this age of fake news because of invisible yet courageous public servants like Mike McGowan. If you are one of those who don't, read this book.

Review: I've known Mike for nearly 35 years and was with him early in his law enforcement career. The fun part of the job was the hustling around and scooping up "bad guys". The tough part of the job was keeping the meticulous notes, the careful collection of data and evidence for the future case. Mike always had the ability to put together the best possible case work to present to the prosecutors. It is of no surprise to me or anyone who worked with him that he had great success with each and every job. Also breathtaking when you consider that this job that he gave so much to, sacrificed so much for, suspected him for even five minutes. This is an outstanding read and should be regarded by the boots on the ground cops ("those who can, do....) as a how-to guide. And to managers ("...those who can't, teach....") perhaps a lesson in humility. Bravo on a wonderful career and bravo to the family that sustained him throughout.

Review: I realize that thanking our servicemen and first responders is important. I do. But there are other individuals who are in careers where thank you can never be enough. UC is one of them. It is notable that our government is continuously in a war on drugs. But there is another notable player in the war, it’s the consumer. What is it about our society that makes people take the drugs that could possibly kill them?
This book tells the story how other people put their lives on the line so you can risk yours. Well done.

Review: I've tried reading this twice now. Maybe it's just me, but the guy is just too arrogant or macho or something. I guess that's to be expected - you've got to be tough to be an undercover agent for thirty years - but it just doesn't work as someone who's inner voice I want to follow for very long. I'll never know why he was accused of taking money (or was it dope) from the evidence room, but after reading just a couple of chapters I feel like I can see why he would've been suspected...
