Title: Incredible revelations

Review: As someone intimately familiar with the youth sports market and the company Mr. Griffin writes about I can tell you that he brings credibility to this shocking recounting of events over a two year period. The corruption, amoral decision making and financial malfeasance are breathtaking. Especially when considering how all of this blatant mismanagement affected employees and their families lives. The arrogance and hubris displayed by these anti-hero entrepreneurs is astounding but not unbelievable.
Incredibly, Steve’s heroic efforts to turn this garbage barge of corruption around were successful and would have brought this company back from the brink if not for the pandemic. In fact, 2020 was on track to be a banner year. What a fascinating read for anyone interested in youth sports, accounting, finance and general business stories as the life, ethics and even accounting lessons to be learned are many and very interesting to say the least.
Even though I have familiarity with this subject and company, I found the story to be an engrossing page turner and Steve does a great job keeping the reader up late wanting to find out what mess he’ll uncover next.
I highly recommend this book.

Review: Best book I’ve read in awhile...better than “Bad Blood” which I loved.
Full disclosure, I’m the person Steve refers to re: Atlanta fraud (another story there as well). I empathize with everything he says as I remember the fear and wondering if I was wrong even with all the evidence staring me in the face. It’s a tough road and a real pity PE and VC do not do more to mitigate risk (better due diligence) and protect those who raise their hands.
With all that said, I can state without any reservation, Steve’s family values and integrity are infallible. I consider him one of my best mentors and am so glad to see him writing. Indeed, my most distinct memory is how a colleague and I couldn’t wait for his trips to ATL so we could hear the latest “story” whether about his family or even something innocuous because it was always riveting and always had us doubling over with laughter. I’m glad he brought some of the funny to this nightmare as that is exactly who he is. Well done.

Title: A riveting book, yet disappointing story

Review: A riveting story that I couldn’t put down! The book reinforces how important ethics and a proper moral compass are to any business. Without the proper checks and balances in place, the company’s corrupt executives set the business on a irreversible path of destruction.

The book is an incredibly vivid read which seems more like a documentary than a fiction novel. It reads like a thriller with unexpected twists and turns caused by greed, corruption and criminal activity within a youth sports business.

Having firsthand experience with “Epic”, the facts Steve presents are the only version of the story that explains the outcome and demise of then business.

The new face (the author) takes us through his detailed unraveling of a management team caught up in decision making void of concerns for customers, vendors, friends, and employees. If you’ve ever taken the high road when faced with “questionable” strategic options, let the author introduce you to the sad implications of those who didn’t – “leaders” brimming with personal greed, who brush off the thought of downside risk, and believe they are invincible. When an experienced and wiser CEO steps into play, it’s remarkable (and sad) to follow the reactions, denials, lies, panic and self-induced destruction of a team and company that should be operating to this day. A revealing story of ethical decisions (or not) unfolding at a furious clip.
