Review: I have been a huge fan of Wilbur Smith since reading "The Sunbird" nearly 40 years ago. "River God" and "The 7th Scroll" are two of my all time favorite books. I used to really look forward to anything new from this author; but this book, coupled with his last effort ("Desert God"), are just terrible. The plot is ridiculous, details are ridiculous, dialogue (such as it is; most of the book is narration) is ridiculous; continuity with his earlier books is non-existent (there are too many conflicts between previous stories to mention; not the least of which, Pharaoh Tamose was killed by the Hyksos, in Smith's 3rd Egypt book, and eventually succeeded by his son Nefer Seti; now, in Pharaoh, he's killed again, under different circumstances, and succeeded by a totally different set of sons. My guess, which many other reviewers have already mentioned, is that Mr. Smith isn't writing anymore; he just drafts rough story outlines, and gets some hack (probably paid by the word) to flesh them out. Very disappointing, and it does a dis-service to his legacy; anyone reading these as their first introduction to Wilbur Smith would be justified in never picking up another book by him again. They would never know how great his story-telling used to be. Just Sad. Again, River God and 7th Scroll are fantastic reads; Warlock is silly, but fun; The Quest is a weird, disappointing, disjointed collection of metaphysical glop, but at least it reads like a story; Desert God & Pharaoh are pure garbage. I want my $22 back.

Review: I love the character Taita! Here he is in another adventure. He is much older but he is living a long healthy life and age is not an issue with him. Tamose has died and his older son, who is crazy has taken the throne. Taita knows he is the wrong man to do this and knows that the younger son Rameses should be on the thrown. This story is about their quest of getting Rameses and his wife, the future Queen Cleopatra, onto that throne and how they go about making it happen. With that said, I only gave it 4-stars because I was a bit disappointed in the flow of the story. I didn't feel it was as developed as other books featuring Taita.

Review: I have been a fan and avid reader of Wilbur Smith, since I first read Sunbird. I followed the Courtney's of South Africa through the Goldmines and the Great Diamond hole in Kimberley until the Golden Fox and adored the character of Centaine.I followed the fortunes of the Ballentynes of Rhodesia until it became Zimbabwe.I read the once off stories and enjoyed each and everyone.I read the Seventh Scroll and a few more of the Taita books, however, I found Pharaoh to be unbelievably childish and totally unrealistic. Is it finally time for the amazing Wilbur Smith to stop writing?

Review: I was a bit disappointed with this, the latest in Wilbur Smith's "Egypt" series. Having read the previous 3, I had high expectations for this book, but unfortunately it didn't live up to them. I was disappointed with the character "Taita", whom I thought had changed considerably from earlier depictions - I don't remember him as being so "self-obsessed" before, though it is some time since I read the first 3 books.Still a good read but not up to his usual standard

Review: I've been reading Wilbur Smith novels for 20+ years. This one seemed strange. The writing style was different. It just didn't click for me. I'm not sure it was written by Wilbur Smith. If it was, he's changed a lot!

Review: I have read and re-read most of Smith's books. One might say obsessed. I know the books, characters and plots thoroughly. But these last two books are so misaligned from the preceding books in their series. His prior works were meaty and substantial. These last two books are amateurish, the dialect between the characters is so pathetic, actually uncharacteristic of the characters themselves when one really knows the prior stories. I find myself actually rolling my eyes at times. Then at other times I'm finding I'm not bothering to read the rest of the sentence because it's so predictable or so flat. I would agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews in that these last two books do not represent nor reflect him very well and are probably written by someone else. So disappointing, especially when I've been anticipating another book, especially about Taita, for some time.

Review: I was deeply disappointed by the quality and content of this book. Had it not carried Wilbur Smith's name, I would have ditched it after the first 100 pages. I did stick it out to the end--as much to see how ridiculous the plot line and self-obsessed protagonist Taita could get. I was not disappointed there--it almost felt like a parody of a real story. This saddens me as I was first introduced to ancient Egyptian history, culture and characters by Smith's earlier books, decades ago, and I've been hooked ever since! I often wished there would be more in this series--which just deepens my disappointment today.I actually checked several times to be sure that this book was actually (at least "supposedly") written by Wilbur Smith and not some "co-author" situation. I would guess, as some have suggested, that this may indeed be a ghost-writing job by an author of much less talent. Or perhaps Mr. Smith's ability to deliver stories of his past caliber is at an end. If so, I thank him for his many, many fine contributions and the hundreds of hours of satisfied reading I've received from his earlier works. But I warn new readers to avoid this title and celebrate Wilbur Smith's and Lord Taita's literary contributions through their earlier publications.
