Title: A story worthy of the cover and blurb

Review: Advertised as a sort of Game of Thrones with Middle Eastern influence, with the Crusades as an overarching plot and replete with Lovecraftian deities, the story does not disappoint. Some of the characters' motivations may be difficult to grasp at first, as well as keeping track of the various twists and turns, but that's due to the format. There is easily enough story here for a trilogy packed in here for a trilogy, but the author has instead chosen to confine the majority of the book's action to two dueling perspectives rather than go into a multitude of other characters' points of view.

Readers will quickly pick up the Game of Thrones feel as the two primary characters, both leaders and fighting men, must contend not just with each other, but with the scheming and political manipulations of their own sides, but the chief conflict remains between the janissary Kevah and Crusader Michah, a conflict that soon proves tragic as both come to realize the terrible cost of the war to them.

I use tragic in a very specific sense, because the gods - or angels and djinn to be more accurate - soon intervene in ways both horrific pyrokinetic, as well as subtle, exacting ironically painful consequences for the choices these protagonists must make.

I must also commend the quality of writing, with many an eloquent passage and turn of phrase

Finally, while there are some obvious parallels to real-world conflicts here, I was happy to find this was no apologist work for either side. The excesses of both are shown and not excused, and readers will find themselves immersed in an amazing tale. I eagerly await the next installment.

Title: Epic high fantasy

Review: Gunmetal Gods is a superb, well-written adult high fantasy novel that exposes the reader to a mythical world of warriors, djinn, and gods all locked in a battle for control of the planet's fate. The story is told mainly from two different points of view Kevah, a warrior of legend for being the only man to kill a Mangus, and Micah the Metal, a conqueror for the faith of the Archangel. Unlike most high fantasy novels set in fantasy Europe, this story is set in a Persian fantasy environment. Instead of kings, there are Sahas. The religions represented in this story reflect more of a Muslim background than Christianity, which is a nice change from my usual reading. Both main characters are relatable, and the sorrows and triumphs they go through in this story are pretty thrilling.
I can't wait to start reading the next adventure in this series, and I hope the author continues to expand this series in the future.

Title: Immersive read

Review: A little dark, a little alternate history, a little epic, “Gunmetal Gods” does not disappoint. You will love the character development and the detailed world-building. Author Zamil Akhtar has knitted together an immersive story with high stakes and lots of action. I particularly enjoyed his use of first-person point of view, narrated by both the protagonist and the antagonist. Akhtar slips easily between the two and sometimes you’re not sure who to root for.
The overall editing and production is excellent, with no outright typos and only a few (IMO) slightly out of place words. I wasn’t really hooked until about 20% in…after that, couldn’t put it down. Oh, “GG” suffered a bit from the soggy-center effect. It’s hard to avoid with a relatively long (500 pages) epic novel. Also, at about 70%, Akhtar started using secondary character points of view that I didn’t care for, but that’s likely a personal preference. However, in the end, he stuck the landing and gave us a nice denouement chapter to wrap up the story.
“GG” has been compared favorably with Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” series. There is also a strong influence of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos as well as Sanderson’s “Misborn” series. If you enjoy a little ‘dark’ in your fantasy stories, but don’t need to get altogether too ‘grim,’ then “Gunmetal Gods” may be just the thing for you.

Review: I was pleasantly surprised by this book!

It gets going very quickly - some might find the pacing a bit fast. As someone who prefers slower books I still enjoyed it all the way through.

The characters were really fun to read and the intrigue kept me on edge. The characters were relatable, including the villain. I sympathized with their plight and emotions.

The ending was satisfying but I wanted more. I hope the author revisits this world or even these characters in a future book!

Gunmetal Gods shines especially in three areas: its colorful characters, unique setting, and some of the more mysterious elements going on, which I can't get into because of spoilers :)

Review: For a first book published by an author, this is an amazing foray into the world of literature. From characters that are relatable in their desires, to world building that evokes Sanderson, I couldn’t get enough of this book. The only downside was the book ended before I knew it, however, it also gives hope to future installments in this series (of which, I’d preorder now if I could).

Title: A fresh, inventive voice in fantasy

Review: This was a well-written novel that is a welcome departure from traditional, euro-centric fantasy. Inspired by the Crusades and with infused generous splashes of Middle-Eastern folklore and mythology, it mostly follows two characters--Kevah, a former slave and war hero--and Micah the Metal, a religious zealot and crusader intent on re-taking Kevah's home city on behalf of Micah's religion and country.

It is a dark book, sometimes a little disturbing, sometimes quite funny, and almost always interesting. Told mostly from Kevah's and Micah's alternating points of view, we get deep looks into their motivations, as well as looks into several other fascinating and fleshed out characters. The book doesn't pull many punches, so there are moments of truly horrific violence. But they are never gratuitous and are used in service of both plot and character.

I personally really enjoyed it and look forward to Akhtar's next offering.
