Review: OVERVIEW

This book feels like a mind-meld from one music nerd to another. At first I found myself disagreeing with Sanneh’s emphasis on the importance of genre, but came to appreciate it as a framework to investigate the ways in which music cultures rise and are ultimately defined in retrospect. He also acknowledges throughout that genres continually influence and interweave with one another.

ON REGGAE

Perhaps this needs its own book, but I do feel like the coverage of reggae is lacking here. This music from the tiny Caribbean island of Jamaica has had, and continues to have a massive musical impact across the hip hop, punk, dance, and pop genres.

Reggae could practically be the 8th genre in the sub title of the book. While Sanneh does acknowledge the influential role of Jamaicans and their sound-system culture on hip hop (DJs, MCs, etc.), that same influence is generally missing from the dance music section, which he firmly roots in the New York disco scene. While disco innovations were hugely influential, especially on house and techno, so were the Jamaican sound-system innovations on genres like jungle and dubstep. With dub music for example, Jamaican studio engineers became musicians in their own right by using their mixing boards and electronic effects processors as instruments, essentially inventing the remix. Meanwhile, Jamian DJs (selectors) used special “dubplate” records, exclusive to certain DJs, that would set them and their dancehall parties appart. And the sound-system designers, in collaboration with the studio engineers, pushed bass frequencies to new levels of fidelity in their efforts to move bodies in the dancehalls. Dub influenced remixes, exclusive dubplates, and pushing bass frequencies all became cornerstones across the various sub-genres of EDM. I'd argue that reggae has been as influential on dance music as disco.

In the pop genre too, reggae has had an outsized impact. Some of the biggest hits by Culture Club, Cindy Lauper, Tina Turner, and Blondie were essentially reggae tunes. And of course there are many more modern-day pop tunes influenced by Jamaican music, not the least of which is the most popular pop today—reggaeton.

Review: This is an ambitious book. The history is illuminating, especially the sections on dance music and hip hop. The section on pop was disappointing. It completely ignored the role of producers (like Max Martin) on current pop. I wonder if there is a better conclusion here, beyond saying that this history may be irrelevant because off Spotify. I wanted something more definitive in the end, but the journey was fun.

Review: I purchased this book as a gift for my 14 year old grandson. He had become interested in learning about older music. I thought is would be great research for him. The language is too advanced for his age. However, perhaps he will keep it for a reference in later years.

Title: Comprehensive and thoughtful exploration of popular music

Review: Mr. Sanneh has written a brilliant book about popular music of the past 50 years and his ongoing relationship to it, via an exploration of the seven genres of the title (rock; R & B; country; punk; hip-hop; dance; and pop).

What makes the book interesting is that it's not about the biggest bands, but the push and pull in each genre (eg, outlaw country vs traditional) and the impact each has.

Sanneh is a former NY Times, and current New Yorker, staff writer and he writes both with the thoughtfulness and humor you'd expect. Well worth the read.

Review: It's hard to say exactly what "Major Labels: A History of Popular Music in Seven Genres" is -- but it's safe to say it's not really a history.

Yes, former New York Times' pop music critic Kelefa Sanneh does touch on the roots of the seven genres he discusses, but as a history, "Major Labels" really isn't. Instead, I'd call it seven historical essays on the various genres, with modern music genres -- dance and hip-hop -- getting more history and the earlier ones relying more on analysis than timelines.

Regardless, however, "Major Labels" is an insightful, well-written book about popular music through 2020, and there's much to learn and ponder here. For the most part, Sanneh does his homework (though mentioning King Crimson and Styx as though they were at all similar is an error of staggering proportions) and his research, so what he didn't experience personally he still writes about knowledgably.

For me, the chapters about punk, hip-hop and dance were the most interesting because they covered less familiar ground, but all were worth reading. Though veteran fans will enjoy hearing old names again, perhaps the greatest value would be for younger readers who haven't lived through a lot of 20th century music. "Major Labels" will add perspective and depth to what they're listening to today, and also will open some doors to older bands they may come to appreciate.
