Review: This book is very important to own and reflect upon. Consider that it makes the bold claim that the RC and Lutheran Church do not any longer disagree with the doctrine of Justification Through Faith - in essence. It is in the cracks of such essence that the differences remain. The Roman Catholic Church still holds on to the sacrament of communion as one which can only be administered only by a priest, and the congregation can not partake of the wine - which is something, as a Protestant Christian, that grieved me on my last visit to an RC church.

My reading of this book leaves me feeling that as far as the Vatican is concerned, certain semantics and voluminous canon law still bolt the Grace of God not to library walls in Latin any longer, but to the sacerdotal role of their priesthood - leaving huge questions about the book of Hebrews, and the Priesthood of All Believers. This is a very important book for any theological library; not just as a record of an ecumenical milestone, but as a record of something which may result in an insidious compromise which may cause an unwarranted climate of ease, where there is much dialog to be had.

This is a PROVISIONAL document as I see it. In the meanwhile, please read " The Nature of Doctrine: Religion and Theology in a Postliberal Age, 25th Anniversary Edition [Paperback] George Lindbeck (Author), Bruce D. Marshall (Introduction) ". Lindbeck was at Vatican II, and was a key player on the Lutheran side. Read Lindbeck closely, and then read this Joint Declaration. I think you will find that not all Lutherans think alike on the issues concerned after reading Lindbeck's work.

The Joint Declaration is an important addition to any theological library; buy it!

Review: Anyone interested in Christendom, the Reformation, Counter-reformation, Roman Catholicism, and Lutheranism, should own and study this most important work. I say this as an Orthodox Christian who converted from Roman Catholicism. This is a most valuable work, that is pretty accessible to the average person with a HS diploma or above, who is interested in the issue of justification.

I'm not sure there are any winners or losers in this case. While both parties agree to many important things, they also agree to disagree on many equally important things (e.g., free will/synergy-divine monergism and the role of the sacraments, esp. Confession/Reconciliation). Thus from a purely Eastern Orthodox perspective, it seems like they want to show far more agreement than they really do when you look at the impact of justification in the life of the average sinner. Take what it means to be justified in each communion. For the RCs, the role of justification is limited as serious post-baptismal sin can only be removed by the Sacrament of Confession, which is not the case for Lutherans. So while they claim much agreement on justification in theory, in practice, RCs and Lutherans continue to insist on the same specifics of Christian practice that they have since the Reformation. The RC is still officially mandated to go to confession at least once a year and to confess all known mortal sins, as he has "lost" his justification thru sin. The Lutheran is not; as his justification suffices. If so, do they really agree on justification? I think not, in practice or in theory.

And both Lutherans and RCs need to compare this Joint Declaration to the primary historical documents on the subject that remain fully in place and "force" for each communion: for Lutherans, that is ordinarily the Augsburg Confession, and for RCs, the Council of Trent. But there is another issue for RCs, for whom this document has a somewhat ambiguous place in regard to adequately and accurately explicating RC doctrine on justification. RCs have to start with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is binding and which has a detailed section on justification. But that section relies mostly on Augustine and the Council of Trent, and makes no specific mention of this Joint Declaration. That begs the question for non-RCs: where does one find the final and binding RC statement on justification? In the Joint Declaration or the Catechism? I think the answer is in the latter. See Pope John Paul II's preface or introduction to the Catechism and "The Doctrinal Value of the Text."

Unfortunately, there is no discussion in the Joint Declaration of any ecumenical discussions and agreements between RCs or Lutherans and other christian bodies. Thus sadly for Eastern Orthodoxy, there is no discussion in the Joint Declaration about the East's views and RC's and Lutheran's prior statements to us about them and vice versa. I would add the same for John Wesley's important views on justification/sanctification and the Methodist dialogs with RCs and Lutherans.

Anyone interested in seeing how Rome interacts with another communion in ecumenical discussions absolutely must have this work and study it to see if Rome is making any change or adjustment in her prior officially binding stance on justification. I think they will see they are not, but rather are really just reinterpreting and reexplaining in new language what they have to officially believe, since the Council of Trent is still entirely binding forever on RCs. It will be interesting to then see what Rome says to Constantinople on the subject of justification and whether Rome will then start more readily using our language on theosis and deification (which has been most favorably studied at some length recently by Finnish Lutherans).
