Title: Excellent book by Susan Eastman

Review: Susan Eastman, who is a professor at Duke Divinity School, does a splendid job in this book. She conducts an interdisciplinary study of Paul's anthropology by studying ancient views of the person and contemporary views in a critical manner. She takes the field further by helping us to rethink models of personhood that aids the reader to rethink the way we can interpret Paul. What is especially interesting is the way in which she integrates insights from ancient and contemporary philosophy, neuroscience and psychology. Eastman succeeded in writing the book in clear and lucid language that is understandable to all. For scholars who work on social identity theory (SIT) and related approaches this book will be very helpful indeed. Eastman does not engage with SIT as such, which she also admits in her book, but this is exactly where I found the most interesting dialogue partner. So, her book helps me and other in my circles exceptionally well to articulate notions of the person, ancient and modern, which enlighten us and help is connect dots in ways we could not have done before. So, I would highly recommend this book, especially for those who want to take these studies further, because it opens up several research gaps in the field of New Testament Studies. I agree with Michael Gorman's endorsement that this is a "remarkable achievement" and that of John Barclay that Susan Eastman is "an intellectual explorer" who in this book went on a journey and "returned in triumph".

Review: Susan Eastman has connected incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, personhood, Pauline anthropology, and New Creation; while conversing with philosophers and scientists. I’m blown away by the second-person perspective and self-in-relation reality she wonderfully pulls from Paul. As a father of a two year old autistic boy, I find more hope and peace in this work than any of the ‘specific’ works I’ve read. I can’t fully express how foundation shifting this is or how much encouragement it brings. God Bless Dr. Eastman.

Review: Overview of the book:

Eastman's task is one of correlating Pauline anthropology with ancient and contemporary notions of the person. She introduces two texts that display a rhetorical unity—“I no longer [verb] but [subject plus verb] in me.” (P6)— Galatians 2 and Romans 7. The contrast in these two texts is that the subject in one is Christ and the subject in the other is sin. In both cases, the self is relating to another internally. The Self-relation is one that is puzzlingly impersonal (sin) and personal (christ). Furthermore, she recognizes her work as a Bultmannian project in that it will be an interpretation rather than a regurgitation. The hermeneutic framework with which she will operate is with a second person perspective—the you, the thou. Relying on thinkers like Buber and Levinas she will show how Paul understands the person as fundamentally a relation of I and Thou. There is a prior unity of subject and object, and this consciously colors her reading of Paul. The self, understood in this way, is defined in it’s relation to others before the notion of the ‘self’ emerges. Because the person is never ‘left alone’ we are also to understand the Pauline self as participatory. We partake in God, as the ground of our self-conception, and in our communities, as the concrete locus of our lived reality. Additionally, this lived reality is essentially related to the body. Her conversation partners, beyond Paul, are stoic philosopher Epictetus and modern neuroscientists. The upshot of this is to show the way Paul might be understood in comparison and contrast to a variety of anthropological schema.
Review:

Eastman hopes to bring Paul onto a 'bigger stage' within the disciplines of philosophy, classics, and psychology. She seems to do just that. Her exegesis is as well quite thorough and each chapter offers a unique approach to that specific text. Although she does engage the methodological question of 'how do we compare', it could be more developed here. Certainly, she is far from a Bultmannian Demythologizing, but what makes possible the ability to compare or not compare across contrasting thinkers? In the end, this text is a fantastic Integrative work in biblical studies.
