Title: Carmilla, the best book to read while recovering from Coronavirus
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2022
Review: Carmilla is an amazing book! I highly recommend it! I bought it for Christmas present for my daughter, she wouldn't read it but I couldn't resist, I started reading it on Year's eve. I was in the first third of the story I returned it to my daughter. Then three weeks later I caught Coronavirus possibly Omicron. I was very sick and discouraged than I thought of reading Carmilla, it lifted up my spirits immediately, the story is fantastic with a lot of mystery and an infactuating friendship between two girls, it is very catching I spent the best days recovering from a dreadful disease in a positive mood and I got better soon after I finished reading Carmilla! I will order another copy since I was coughing on the pages.

Review: This 19th century vampire tale inspired generations of Gothic horror writers, as well as several film adaptations; the story itself is tame by modern standards, but must have been quite unsettling 150years ago,
when so many still held superstitions from the past. Highly recommended!

Title: Don't Stop At the Introduction- Inside is a Delightful Surprise!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2016
Review: The book starts with an introduction in dense, florid 19th century prose that probably throws off half the people who try to read it. Then the story begins and the style completely changes to something quite readable. And fun! It really is a good, old-fashioned horror story. I'd also assumed the notorious lesbian undertones would be so subtle they'd be almost undetectable, but I was actually pretty surprised. Not that the book is explicit, but there is more voluptuous description of kisses and caresses than I expected between two women in a Victorian novel. But the real punch comes from the horror aspects of the novel. The well-worn gothic imagery of isolated castles, flickering candles and horses rearing in the moonlight actually feels fresh when encountered what is practically their original context. If you're a fan of vampire fiction, you'll probably get a kick out of seeing elements destined to define the genre appear on the page for the first time. The scenes where the vampire makes its nocturnal visits are crisp and effective, evoking visuals that easily match the best films. And while the denouement is both somewhat corny and yet over too quickly, I found the vampire's death rather jarring. If you have any appetite for 19th century novels and/or vampires, "Carmilla" is a quick, enjoyable read and offers plenty of bloodsucking bang for your buck.

Title: A review of the book, mostly
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2021
Review: First the font size is so small that I had difficulty reading it even with my 2x reading glasses. Second it seems to have been some sort of printout that was copied and glued together. The pages have no numbers, and the text itself only takes up about 60% of the page. I know it was cheap but I didn't expect this, I should have found it somewhere free online, and copied it myself, at least I would have given it a larger easier to read font. My suggestion to you is to either find a free online copy or spend a bit more and hopefully get a better quality book.
(The story itself is good, not really exciting, but good. It might also be difficult to read for modern audiences as it was written over 100 years ago. For a slightly abridged version you might want to watch the movie 'The Vampire Lovers' 1970 which pretty much follows Sheridan La Fanu's storyline. [it features some nudity and gore])

Title: A Classic of the Genre!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2018
Review: Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla” first appeared as a serial in “The Dark Blue” and tells the story of Carmilla, a female vampire, and her attempts to prey upon the story’s narrator, a young English ex-patriot woman who lives with her father in the Styria region of Austria. Laura, the narrator, has a vision of Carmilla while a young girl. She eventually forgets it until she learns of the death of a friend. A carriage accident results in a countess putting her daughter into Laura’s father’s care and Laura recognizes Carmilla as the girl she saw in her “dream.” Carmilla refuses to divulge her background to Laura, but alternates between extreme affection with romantic advances and melancholic distance. Girls in nearby towns begin dying of an unknown illness and Carmilla experiences pain at the sound of funerary hymns. Larua’s family, descended from the House of Karnstein, receives a shipment of restored heirlooms, including a painting of a countess named Mircalla who exactly resembles Carmilla. Laura’s friend’s father then visits and, together with Laura’s father, they visit the nearby ruins of Karnstein castle, where they open Mircalla’s tomb and find Carmilla floating in seven inches of blood. The men drive a stake through her heart, behead her, and burn the ashes.
The story appeared twenty-six years before Bram Stoker published “Dracula” and Le Fanu apparently based part of it on a 1751 dissertation by Dom Augustin Calmet titled “Traité sur les apparitions des espirits et sur les vampires ou les revenants de Hongre, de Moravie, &c.”. Interestingly, the word “vampire” only appears on page 84 of this publication and it is clear that the use of the word was meant to drive home the gothic elements of the story that the reader had encountered up to that point. That said, modern readers will have noticed all of the tropes of the genre prior to this point in the story, even if they didn’t know anything about “Carmilla”. The portrayal of a lesbian vampire was notable for its time, though Le Fanu primarily used this to combine religious fears of the time in order to base the terror in the transgression of mores about women’s sexuality. This version reprints the complete story in a nice hardcover volume with a simple, yet evocative, cover and makes a good gift edition for the vampire aficionado, though it does not include the original illustrations by David Henry Friston and Michael Fitzgerald.

Title: Don’t Bother
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020
Review: Zero stars. Disappointed. This is merely a PDF that has been bound with a cover. The book is too big (8.5 x 11) and the print is too small, making it difficult to read.
