Title: More heart than head
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2022
Review: When did you ever think a book by Theroux could be described as being more a product of heart than head?

On balance, I think it’s well worth reading. It’s also flawed.

The positives:

He does what almost no one else even attempts to do: take a long, careful look at the rural South. (By way of contrast, I just finished “A Measure of Belonging: Twenty-One Writers of Color on the New American South”. Not one of its essays takes us out of the city. Most don’t even take us out of the university. The countryside all around them might as well be on the moon.)

He makes every effort to be fair-minded and write what he believes to be true.

He shows us the depth of poverty in the South, and the extent to which racism and the legacy of slavery continue to afflict its people, both Black and White.

Unlike some other reviewers, I enjoyed his “digressions” on Southern writers and the n-word.

He displays more compassion and empathy than I would have thought possible from this infamous sourpuss.

The less-positive:

This is not a particularly well-balanced portrait of the rural South. If you ask every person you meet about race, you will produce a book that is predominantly about race. Similarly, if you seek out the poorest and most remote regions of the rural South, you will produce descriptions about how poor and remote they are. The rural South is not completely given over to racial divisions and desperate poverty. Reading Theroux, you could be forgiven for coming away with that impression.

As a native Northerner who now lives much of each year in the South, I’m skeptical of Theroux’s often repeated claim that rural poverty in the South is on a different scale and level than in other parts of the country. Just as Clinton, Gates, and other major donors/foundations don’t have to travel to Africa to find areas in desperate need of help, so too Theroux didn’t have to travel to the South to find desperate rural poverty. Drive 10 miles inland from any part of coastal Maine; go down the dirt roads of rural - not touristy - Vermont and New Hampshire; get off the interstates in upstate New York. Why must we always be blind to our own backyards?

Theroux accurately describes how limited the contact between Blacks and Whites can be in the South. To the extent this can be attributed to racism (as it inarguably can be), I suspect a defensive Southerner could note that, although Theroux could live literally anywhere, he has chosen to live on Cape Cod (with a Black population of 3%) and Hawaii (with a Black population of less than 2%). How much daily contact does he have with Black Americans?

Finally, where oh where was Theroux’s editor? The book is highly repetitive and at least 50 pages too long. My own pet theory is that after writers sell a certain number of books and/or win a number of awards, they are deemed too “significant” to be subjected to the normal editing process. All too often, it shows.

———-

On balance, and despite my cavils, do read this book. If, like me, you enjoy engaging with an author, you will be rewarded for your efforts.

Title: Born and Bred in the poor rural white south
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2022
Review: I have child memories of the separate facilities and how perplexed I was by them. Mother tried to explain the logic "It's just how it is." Saw some of the hatefulness, made no sense either. As I grew older I wanted to to get to know personally the people who were so forcefully set apart from me, but how to do that? "I want to get to know you and your family because your black" didn't seem like the best introduction. I finally gained a few black friends through --surprise!--interests we had in common. Art. Meditation. Most of my black friends were in a higher educational and economical bracket than I, so the people who had pasts more similar to mine were folks I didn't get to know. For this reason I appreciated DEEP SOUTH because he had reason to go into places where I did not and he brought out answers for which I had questions. Yes, "they" are folks, same as we are. And, my god, both in the book and in my own wee exposure, I have found them as a people to be very forgiving of a white person who they see may be ignorant but who is interested in and unafraid of the dialogues that will lessen that ignorance.

Title: More a Lengthy Sociological Tract than a Travel Book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017
Review: Deep South: Four Seasons on Back Roads by Paul Theroux may not be what you're looking for, if you're looking for a travel book. It is more of sociological tract, and a lengthy one. You might put this in the genre of "Northern Liberal Visits the South and Sees What He Expects to See." Theroux, who lives on Cape Cod and in Hawaii, has traveled the world but until this book had spent little time in the American South.

Theroux focuses mainly on the poor, heavily African-American areas of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. Not for him the historic or hip areas of the South like Charleston, Savannah and Asheville, or even New Orleans, which he visits only briefly. He interviews dozens of people, many of them involved in community organizing and local development. He goes to gun shows, which he enjoys, and to (mostly black) churches. He scrupulously records what he sees and hears. There's not much humor in this book. One of the few times I chuckled was reading his description of a literary conference in Arkansas, where, in a baseball cap and wet shoes, he struggles to explain to organizers that he, too, is a writer. The organizers had never heard of him and referred to him as "Mr. Thorax."

Theroux's efforts to reproduce Southern dialects are painful, at least to this Southerner: "Jest fahn ... get me some pah." That's pie, in Arkansas. Frequently Theroux compares the poorer parts of the South to Africa and India, where he has traveled extensively and lived. He likes to note that the NGOs and rich foundations -- like the Clintons' -- are quick to provide millions in aid to Africa but nothing to South Carolina or Alabama. Indeed, Theroux rails against Bill Clinton. He also isn't too fond of James Agee's most famous work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, which he takes to task for focusing on poor whites and ignoring poor blacks. About John Lewis, the Atlanta Congressman who is famed for his civil rights efforts, he is both admiring and, in some ways, patronizing. He even puts down one of my favorite Southern writers, Ellen Gilchrist, referring to her as a chronicler of the lives of wealthy Southern housewives, which is about as far from what she really is as can be.

Of course, this is all somewhat unfair to Theroux, who is a serious writer, one who has traveled the world and written wonderfully about it in his many books of journeys and in his fiction as well.

I can forgive Theroux a lot, for his novels like Mosquito Coast and Saint Jack, and for his remarkable early travel books such as The Old Patagonian Express and The Great Railway Bazaar, and especially as he is a fan of Charles Portis (True Grit, The Dog of the South, Gringos and other works) one of the great comedic writers of the 20th century. Theroux even manages to briefly meet Portis in person at his home in Little Rock.

It took me weeks to struggle through Deep South, with its heavy emphasis on the reportorial. I'm glad I read it, but I would recommend it to others only with the codicil that it is not your traditional cup of travel tea, or, should I say, glass of sweet tea.
