Review: This is my first ever Amazon review, but I couldn't stand not writing one for this book! I am a voracious fantasy reader, and will read almost ANYTHING involving magic, other worlds, and political intrigue. I am also a member of the LGBT community, and it is very, very hard to find decent fantasy books with LGBT characters to relate to. This book was everything that I have been searching for for 21 years! The story pulls you right in. I started it at 10 pm and finished it at 2 am. I couldn't bring myself to put it down. I sincerely hope to see more from this author.

Review: So, the book just came out today, I thought to read the first chapter or three. Eight hours later I finished my 'quick preview'.The book was a little slow starting but meticulously researched and with characters that grew on you.The mystery reveal was barely telegraphed, but looking back was quite apparent.Nicely done.No little flowers of princesses here. We are led to slowly meet and learn the major characters, and by the end, they are dear friends of ours, and I am saddened to see them go.400 pages, devoured cover to cover, and wouldn't be upset to see more.Thank you.

Review: It’s a typical fantasy in a world that has magic but also magic-haters. Denna is pledged to wed a prince. She had no choice, but that’s what she was raised to expect. (The royal characters all have multisyllabic names but they’re shortened to 1 or two syllables.) She travels to her potential husband’s kingdom where she meets him and his sister, among other characters. The prince, Thandi, at first seems pleasant and kind and even sensible, but as the novel progressed, I liked him less and less. He seemed to become self-important and overbearing. And that first kiss Denna had with him? Yuck.Maybe my dislike was because I preferred his sister, Mare, as a love interest. She’s a little reckless, but managed to have at least one devoted friend, and she cares about her family and her home. In this world, women are supposed to be equal to men and same-sex relationships are common. However, in execution, that seemed to fall by the wayside. The men in this novel make the decisions, for the most part. There are some powerful women, but they’re tertiary characters. Even Denna’s mother and sister, current and future queens of their land, don’t have much sway in this story.I don’t think this was intentional, but this became almost a novel about men against women. Thandi and their father don’t appreciate or respect Mare, and they control her life. She was passed over as ruler because her father, the king, thought only men should rule, so her younger brother Thandi was elevated over her. Then, the two main kingdoms were all set to attack a country ruled by a woman. These same male rulers continue to box in and determine the lives of both Mare and Denna. They were blind to the knowledge and ideas that the women had.

Review: Of Fire and Stars was a very interesting book to read. Our heroines Denna and Mare split the Pov's throughout the book and are very distinct characters. Denna is a Princess who is forced to marry Mare's brother in order for their lands to form an alliance. It's a very strenuous alliance, due to the fact that many in Mare's land oppose the union with Denna. It sounds like your typical book of war, love, and betrayal. What sets this book apart are the heroines themselves. They wind up falling in love--- with each other. She's also not conventionally pretty. All of this does not stop love from blossoming between the two women.It was refreshing to see two prominent heroines fall in love with each other. It showed a progressiveness that we don't often find in literature, even though we should. I never take gay characters for granted, because I personally identify as gay, and I love to see how the gay perspective is transformed through story telling. I value reading about the struggle of my people and how they can become triumphant. It gives me hope.I will say that the first third of the book was very slow. I'll also admit that I didn't love Denna at first. She seemed very frivolous and completely at the mercy of her emotions. Overtime she grew on me. I think that's in part by her love for Mare. I fell in love with Denna through the eyes of Mare. Mare showed me the qualities I was overseeing in Denna. It was invigorating to have a character's pov change my perspective on another character. I've never had that happen before. The action in the book wasn't in abundance, another small gripe that I had. I often felt like the love between the two women was too much at the forefront, even if it felt more like a timid cat & mouse game for most of the book.On the romance alone and the themes it's promoting, I'm happily looking forward to a sequel. If you love passionate characters, gay lovers, and war & betrayal, you will love this book
