Review: I just spent an intensive two weeks with this book, and the entire time I was wishing I had tackled this topic earlier... as in years ago. I went from being a person who couldn't figure out how to cut a long video into shorter pieces (my original goal), to being a person who can create a scene with one video floating across another in a spinning rectangle, complete with "lens flare," and lines of text both "scrolling" and "crawling" across the screen in the background, all narrated by my female voice converted into a low male voice ... not that anyone would want to watch such a video, but it was really fun. It's a steep learning curve, though. Video editing is one of those topics where you have to know a bit of everything before you can do anything... how to import media, edit clips, make sequences, correct bad lighting, make transitions, adjust audio volume, make titles, choose the right codec, etc. So you have to plow through every chapter and really do the exercises. I could only manage one chapter a day. The most rewarding chapter was the one on multi-camera editing... you can take a bunch of videos from different cameras of the same event and sync them, so that you can switch from camera to camera, and it's SO easy. Another high-payoff topic was learning how to choose a "look" for your entire movie... with one click you can make it look like Alfred Hitchcock or the Matrix. The most difficult concept was key frames and animation, but once you get it, you realize you can "animate" anything -- opacity, color corrections, lighting effects, flying monkeys, volume controls, anything. The "Audio" chapter was annoying because the audio would have these "flaws" that were so subtle I couldn't hear them on my laptop speakers, so I couldn't really tell that they were "fixed." The "Compositing" chapter was too short -- we learned about green screens, and the "track matte key effect," and then it was over... I wanted more. The "Color Correction" chapter was disjointed because it went back and forth between the new "Lumetri" features and the "obsolete" features, but I was glad they did because in many cases, the "obsolete" tools are simpler and do exactly one thing well. All in all, I would say this book taught me more useful stuff in a shorter amount of time than any other "technology" book I have read. (P.S. You need a powerful computer with an Adobe-compatible graphics processor, no way around it. Well, there might be ways around it, but they aren't fun.)

Review: I am new to Premiere, having been a FCPX user for the past 4 years. I have been wanting to make the switch over to ACC for quite she time and this book seemed like the perfect path of entry.

Unfortunately, it's not. On the surface, the presentation looks great. Plenty of detailed images to guide you along the way, extensive table of contents that seem to cover everything, etc. However once you start digging into the lessons you will soon find yourself flipping back the pages to see if you missed something along the way.
At first I blamed myself; perhaps I should have some better understanding of Premiere before trying to tackle this book. But this is a beginner book.That means it should assume I have ZERO knowledge of Premiere and it's terminology. As it is, I have SOME understanding, but that didn't help me in the least.
I would routinely get halfway through a chapter only to realize that I apparently should have (as an example) already have media loaded into sequence preset. I went back and there was no mention of being instructed to import media into my project panel. This is evidenced by the fact that I am not even on Chapter 3 yet, which is about Importing Media. So how am I supposed to have any contextual understanding of everything I will see LATER? Why not walk me through the process and explain these things to me as I am able to see them in a step by step scenario?
Additionally, a lot of the instructions are never clearly indicated as being literal or hypothetical.

Example: "Give your customized project settings preset a name in the Save Settings Dialog box, add notes if you want, and then click OK. The preset will appear in a custom folder under Sequence Presets".

Okay, that sounds clear and articulate and very specific. The only problem is, the walkthrough hasn't reached a point where I can even see this described layout. I spent 20 minutes scrubbing the previous 5 pages to see what I missed only to realize it was letting me know about something I MAY see later. Horrible.

I work for a tech company in the Multimedia department as a script writer for product demos. This is piss poor writing. You really need to re-evaluate the concept of writing for beginners. This has been a waste of time...but I am persisting out of necessity. Either way, I would avoid this title until they can give it an update that is more cohesive and beginner friendly.

Review: I love the classroom in a book series of books. I've used almost all of them. This one is a bit jumbled and confusing compared to the current 2017 books for other CC applications. It won't be a problem if you are already familiar with Adobe software but I could not recommend this book to someone just starting out with Adobe. Also, the media disk that came with the book did not work on several computers so I downloaded the lesson assets from the publishers website. Some of these assets did not match the lessons in the book. Its easy to still learn what the lessons teach from context and playing around with mismatched assets but it seems sloppy compared to the usually perfect Classroom In a Book series. I learned a lot fron this product but I was disappointed with the lack of attention to detail.
