Title: Just a little too awake for me

Review: I truly enjoyed this story about a rejected diamond in the rough (yep, I've been watching Aladdin) who finds love and acceptance.

This book won't change your life, eventhough the author either tried to, or he/she just wanted to show how woke they are.

Firstly we are told (reminded) that not all aliens identify as a certain gender.

I have read, and thoroughly enjoyed, a book about an alien who chose his gender, against his society's expectations, because of the person he fell in love with.

In this book however, I felt that the author was trying to force a social commentary somewhere for the sole purpose of seeming woke. It has nothing to do with the story or plot and was so egregiously placed, that it felt like the author was standing on a soapbox.

Then we are (literally) reminded that we are not to judge other cultures until we have spent time in those cultures. I agree with this to SOME degree, but it is said in a way that felt as if the soapbox was dusted off again.

We aren't allowed to come to this conclusion ourselves, we are blatantly told not to do it. It would be so much better if this book made you think and possibly come to the realization on your own. The author however either doesn't trust the reader to put some thought into it, or doesn't believe the book is written well enough for it to happen organically.

Lastly, the author comments on the problems with capitalism. He/she tells us about a planet were everybody's basic necessities are taken care of by the government and no one goes without. How does the government pay for all this? There are no taxes or inheritance, so once citizens die everything they owned goes to the government.

Because of how that society is structured, this will especially not work in this book. (I'm not going into the whole thing, but for example, only 80% of the citizens will even consider working. So think about how governments struggle to pay for everything and then take away 20% of their money on top of that.)

Yes, a planet with no homelessness or hunger is amazing and it would be very cool. The problem is the author takes a complex problem and addresses it half heartedly. Either don't say how it's done, or have a reasonably good way how this is achieved.

Without the above I might have rated the book 3.5 stars, but I don't like being talked down too. Nor do I want an alien romance novel to assume it can or should school me of the latest social justice trends.

If the social commentary doesn't get worse I will keep on reading this series. Its not great, but it is entertaining if you have nothing new to read by your favourite author.

Review: I have been looking for something new to read to help me get through the current state of the world, and I happened to find this book in Kindle Unlimited.

Long story short: I finished it in 24 hours, and then went back to Amazon and bought the book outright.

I am a huge sucker for sci-fi romance... especially kidnapping/rescued by hot alpha male stories. This series has all of that and more.

The world this author created is absolutely amazing—the physical world, the people and cultures within it, and the rich history she describes are all mind blowing. I loved the characters... the H/h were perfect for each other... and Cebo!! I absolutely loved Cebo!

I’m already planning on reading Choosing Theo again, but slower, as I have a tendency to speed read when something is really good. I absolutely cannot wait for book 2 to come out, and I can only hope it’s about Rhaego ❤️

Do yourself a favor and read this book!!

Review: The writing was solid and the world-building was great, but I did actually find the social commentary a tiny bit heavy-handed. I get what the author was doing, but 1) it shouldn’t be done in a way that takes the reader out of the story and b) the female-centered society and woman-worship...the men doing all the cooking and cleaning and learning to be a proper husband...? It all felt ick to me honestly. I wouldn’t want that for women in any society, so why would I feel like that’s cool for men? I'm a big fan of equality - even when faced with the extenuating circumstances found in this story. It’s exactly this sort of mentality that allowed society and history to justify oppressing women for thousands of years and again - ick.

Title: Keep your politics to yourself…

Review: Limited character descriptions until ch. 14. Still, all in all the story wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t good. It could’ve been. It could’ve been enjoyable if VA didn’t put her personal 2¢ in and bring in same sex marriage ideology, and those who identify as something other than male or female, and her socialistic slants, views and comparisons. Clever, filtering in your opinion under the guise of a story idea to promote your Woke views. Clever, but shameful. It’s this authors prerogative to write whatever she wants, however she wants. The reason there’s no warning is because she knows the vast majority wouldn’t buy this socialistic BS. Pro/con, good/bad, black/white… I’m so tired of this absurdness vomited in the news and I appreciate it being left out of my escape material. That being said, the beginning lay out of a foundation was borderline ridiculous and some scenes copied a few movies (Signs) and similar alien story plot-lines I’ve previously read…ie; a kidnapped female human taken to another planet where a plague has wiped out the female population. But okay, it’s gotta begin somewhere. So here we go. The story plugs along but gains a bit of direction by ch.14 where Theo misinterprets Jade’s intentions of signing on to be his bride. Thinking she’s a spy with ulterior motives sent by his enemies, he devises his own plan to catch her deception. Yawn. Though completely predictable, once it gets past the preachy political drivel, the me Tarzan/you Jane moments, it becomes somewhat digestible. Just keep your personal Woke views out. I’ve blacklisted this author.
