Title: Another "debunker" with an agenda doesn't read the book.

Review: Victor has a tendency to put the word "expert" in quotes to discredit specialists in Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Victor says these "experts" lack critical thinking skills. Victor ties Multiple Personality Disorder, now known as DID, to hysteria and demon possession. He does not have a degree in psychology but he does have an agenda. Victor tells us, "The problem is that it is not clear whether these women are reporting the actual underlying trauma (childhood torture) which caused their mental disorder, or whether their claims are simply another manifestation of their disorder." (p.89) Wow, really? Which came first, the pain, or the broken leg? Victor would have served himself well if he had consulted an "expert" before publication. Dissociative Identity Disorder is in fact a survival mechanism the mind uses in the face of extreme trauma, check out the DSM IV (That's the diagnostic and statistical manual used by experts to diagnose).

Victor, like so many others, attempts to debunk the first of the Ritual Abuse memoirs, "Michelle Remembers" by Michelle Smith and Dr.Pazdar. "Michelle Remembers" is not in Victors bibliography, but he feels qualified to spend a chapter "debunking" it? Victor tells us Michelle was diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder. He suggests that the idea that ritual abuse survivors all suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder came from "Michelle Remembers". Michelle was not diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder. There is no mention of her diagnosis in her book but it is clear that it would be Dissociative Amnesia. She simply blocked it. DID is common in ritual abuse survivors because DID is the result of extreme trauma.

Victor tells us that Michelle was sexually tortured. As common as this is among ritual abuse survivors, and as much as Victor would like to suggest that the memoirs that followed are copycats of Michelle, if Michelle was sexually tortured she does not share this in her memoir. Debunkers say "Michelle Remembers" reads like low budget porn. The closest approximation to porn in "Michelle Remembers" is the depiction of Michelle, as a child, naked in a cage. Debunkers, like Victor, of "Michelle Remember" either have not read the book or bold face lie to suit their agenda.

Victor says that the satanic cult that abused Michelle was a group, "to which her parents belonged." Victor next says investigators into Michelle's story spoke to her father and sister who told them they knew nothing of what Michelle claims. Other attempts at debunking Michelle Remembers suggest that Michelle was just disturbed that she lost her father at an early age. Have debunkers spoken to her father or did her father die when Michelle was young? Anyone who had actually read the book would know that Michelle's father had absolutely nothing to do with what went on. The only one who would have known anything would have been her mother but her mother was not a cult member. It is more likely her mother felt obliged to allow Michelle to be used by the cult in order to cover up a death Michelle was responsible for at the first and only event her mother was a part of, other than when her mother picked Michelle up from the last ritual.

Debunkers point out that Michelle and Dr. Pazder divorced their spouses and married each other. While there may be arguments made as to the ethical nature of their actions, this does not provide evidence that Michelle's childhood account is not true. It is suggested that Michelle was simply trying to impress Dr. Pazder. They say she probably knew that he had been to Africa and tried to impress him with what she knew about the Ekpe Society in Africa. Michelle did not know about the Ekpe Society until Dr. Pazder made the comparison. Members of the Ekpe Society have been known to place children in cages. Placing a child in a cage could not be said to be a culturally specific activity. Even if the group that abused Michelle were inspired by African occultism, they were not the only ones. MKULTRA subproject 121 was interested in Yoruba witchcraft. MKULTRA, try debunking that. I suggest reading "In Search of the Manchurian Candidate" by John Marks.

Most concerning is that the publisher is Open Court. You would think that a company with exclusive rights to public text books would have higher standards. An "expert" with an agenda and lacking research skills is not good for education.

Title: A lucid, rational view of an emotionally charged issue

Review: The author does a wonderful job of dissecting the nature of the "panic" that had many Americans believing in the existence of a Satanic "underground" movement in the eighties and early nineties. Extremely readable and not couched in overly academic language, the book is useful for anyone who needs solid, reasonable information on the subject--the lay public, academics, the clergy, or police officers will all benefit from reading this work and keeping an open mind.
Victor follows the panic from a number of angles; religious, sociologic, folkloric, and so on. For each he presents a balanced case that seeks not to ridicule anyone who "bought into" the stories of widespread Satanism, but simply to understand why they did so. He also shows how some people (psychologists, police, and so on) actually thrived on the notoriety they achieved in their capacity as "witch hunter" and sought to keep the panic alive in order to further their own agendas.
Excellent reading, and a book that shows the danger of blindly believing rumors and unverified conspiracy tales.

Title: MUST read for all, including believers in SRA

Review: This is one of the few books published that deals honestly with the whole satanic ritual abuse/cult crime hysteria, and does so in some detail. There are books written by biased people claiming a satanic cult conspiracy but this book lays out the details and seems to leave nothing out. I reccomend this book for those who believe the satanic cult crime/ child sacrifice claims of certain self-proclaimed experts ( biased and geared to promote a certian religious view and not the simple truth) because ignorance of the facts harms themselves. Another good author is Debbie Nathan. The hysteria from SRA did a lot of damage to many people. While I would have mentioned details of the hysteria culprits, the author did a good job. My copy is dog eared.

Review: We aren't in the middle ages. Englightened people shouldn't believe "survivors" who have "incredible" (literally) excuses for why there is no physical evidence for this allegedly commonplace phenomenon. Using comparisons to "real" secret societies, Victor makes it clear that it would not be possible to hide "all" evidence of a "ritual abuse organization". His conclusive and insightful research is presented with riveting examples in a very logical manner.
