Review: There are so many cookie cutter self help Christian books that contribute nothing to society, yet they are read because of the way they are written and delivered. The content within this book should be required reading for Christians and those interested in Christianity. Unfortunately, while I personally don't have an issue with the academic style of writing and delivery, I don't think the average church goer or Bible study\life group would even attempt to break this down and digest it.

Review: Ronald Sider wrote an important book with an important challenge to Christians to take responsibility for the poor of this planet. I thoroughly agree with this objective. I recently returned from Nepal where I had the opportunity to visit a safe house harboring 10 women rescued from slavery. Four of these women had AIDS and the youngest was going blind from this disease. Many had been sold by their own families. What causes this hideous problem? One important root cause is the extreme poverty in the nation, where even those with jobs likely earn under $2 per day.

Mr. Sider has done much valuable research and thoughtfully offered strategies for action. This book, extensively footnoted, provides many resources for advocacy for the poor. I recommend this book to every American. I would hesitate to elect him to government because he distrusts the free market, advocates trade unions and takes Global Warming seriously. The last six years have shown what chaos is caused when the servant reigns who bases policy on wishful thinking.

I pray that the Lord grants the US a government which can pursue such noble policies from a practical basis.

For myself, I will seriously investigate what I can do to relieve the suffering in the developing world. Thank you Mr. Sider for your passionate call to action.

Title: Plenty of bones, but an undeniably necessary challenge

Review: I loved some of this book and hated some of it. Theologically I struggle to take Mr Sider seriously when he uses the term "biblical" while liberally clumping together Roman Catholics and protestants under the Christian banner. I also think he's guilty of reading into the Bible some of his personal views, not necessarily correct. But the personal challenge to me is undeniably necessary. Uncomfortable, but necessary.

Title: Sider does a good job of critiquing Christian nonchalance towards the global poor

Review: This book ruffles a lot of conservative feathers, as will be seen from other reviews. But Sider at least attempts to begin his theses in the Scriptures, where he does well to draw out the important themes of justice, often related to justice issues.

When it comes to application Sider is a little less careful. He makes some big assumptions, such as the 'problem' of population growth. In addressing trade barriers, one of his major bugbears, he fails to address the important issues of national food or commodity security. If we implemented his suggestions, we would probably see a huge decline in farming in the Western world, which of course would put us in a very precarious position once the developing nations become developed and we have forgotten how to farm.

Nevertheless, on an individual level, Sider does a good job of critiquing Christian nonchalance towards the global poor, and suggests many good and challenging ways in which we can adopt a simpler lifestyle in order to give a greater witness to our neighbours.

Review: I think every American Christian needs to read this book for the perspective it gives. I've read many of the critical reviews and they seem mostly to be politically motivated. I have to ask: When we read scripture verses like, "Sell your possessions and give the money to the poor," why do we, American Christians, exert ourselves so to explain that away, rather than leaning in to carefully examine whether or not that is a word for us today? We avoid such careful self-examination at our own peril. God forbid we be one of the ignorant "goats" that Christ refers to in Matt 25. Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, sick or imprisoned? Scripture indicates those people never understood their responsibility to the poor. We owe it to our eternal souls to get some perspective on this issue and think long and hard, and hopefully allow that thought to make us better followers of Christ. This book is a great starting point.

Title: Angry, passionate but a bit lacking

Review: Sider unfortunately opens and closes this book as an amateur left wing economist, liberally quoting Stiglitz and offering radical proposals without context for the other side of the argument. In the middle is the reason to read this book, a well written tour of the Biblical vision of justice and a call to Christians to implement it both as individuals and as political economic actors (the book is very US centric). Consequently, there’s dissonance and the screed doesn’t rise to the heights it should by making its Scriptural argument more central - and by also giving a much more fair shake to the other side of the economic argument (where, ironically, most of his fellow Evangelicals reside politically)....

Review: Sider does a good job of explaining past trends in the world that have affected the grinding poverty that affects people. He glosses over the United States poverty issues with the comment, "It's complicated." I tried to contact to him to get more, but he hasn't returned the email. Another problem I have is his global warming argument. All other evidence is an existing trend, but the global warming aspect is only presented as future speculation. Overall, though, I am thankful for this mind-expanding read. I do recommend it.

Review: Somebody has to say it. If you want to be a follower of Christ, look around. People need help. Put your money where your mouth is. I had the original edition and I'm glad to see Ron Sider has continued to revise this work to keep up with the current situation, both in the States and around the world.
