Title: An interesting account of deception and intrigue

Review: In this book we get a roller coaster narrative of Deutsche Bank over the years. This is the bank that doled out over two billion dollars to Trump allowing him “to bounce back from multiple bankruptcies, to purchase and develop marquee properties, to recast himself as a successful businessman, to become a viable candidate for president.” The history of the bank is quite a story. The author mentions, “money laundering, tax evasion, manipulating interest rates, manipulating the prices of precious metals, manipulating the currencies markets, bribing foreign officials, accounting fraud, violating international sanctions, ripping off customers, and ripping off the Germans, British, and United States governments.” Yikes!!

This story goes all the back to the late 1800’s and the financing of the Northern Pacific railroad, when a man named Villard managed to pull the wool over the eyes of the bank, employ personal charm and shrew publicity to win over investors and repeatedly mobilize fresh sources of credit, while the business rested on rickety foundations. Hmm, sounds like someone today who had dealings with the bank. By 1933, the bank became a financing source for the Nazi military machine. Even the bank’s annual reports were adorned with swastikas instead of a corporate logo. The bank even engaged in sanction-busting transactions in the early 2000’s zapping $11 billion in Iran, Burma, Syria, Libya, and the Sudan, “single-handedly eroding the effectiveness of peaceful efforts to defuse international crises.” To see the effect of this, here’s one example. The terrorist group Jaysh al-Mahdi detonated bombs all over Iraq, affecting U.S. troops. They were equipped and trained by Hezbollah, which was bankrolled by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which had been financed by Deutsche. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Deutsche was one of the first Western banks to open outposts there. Why not? They were looking at unconstrained profits there. They became the top foreign bank for “Russian IPOs and mergers, working for formerly state-owned enterprises that had fallen under the control of a new class of oligarchs.”

The story of Trump’s dealings with the bank was interesting. There were anonymous shell companies, rich Russians entering into the Trump ventures, possible ties to organized crime, and concern that “real estate projects were Laundromats for illicit funds from countries like Russia, where oligarchs were trying to get money out of the country.” But that didn’t stop the bank from lending to him. By the year 2007 the bank became the largest in the world concocting intricate structures designed to throw off big profits. And the finagling continued. In the first eight months of 2013, the bank received 5,777 requests for information from regulators. That comes out to about one every hour. In 2008, the Feds lifted anti-laundering orders that were previously imposed, and Deutsche quickly reverted to form. As the author notes, “thousands of the mirror trades, representing more than $10 billion, would flow from Moscow to London, then through DBTCA in New York, where the money was converted into dollars, then back to Cyprus or other parts of Europe.”

There is more about suspicious transactions by the president’s son-in-law and how, a woman named McFadden , a veteran anti-money-laundering compliance officer at Deutsche tried to raise alarms only to eventually be fired – a thought provoking story. There was some concern when Trump, heavily indebted to the bank, became president, and an interesting connection between Deutsche, Trump and VTB, a Russian bank. As it turned out, those fears may have been unwarranted. What was intriguing was the fact that in the final months of the Obama administration, it appeared that charges could be filed against Deutsche resulting in billions of dollars in fines. Curiously, the investigation went dark as soon as Trump took the oath of office.

There was a running roughshod over executives by the company, which took a toll as several prominent bankers committed suicide. The book discusses an interesting story about the son, Val, who began investigating the circumstances of his father’s suicide. This theme was woven through the latter part of the book.

Review: Astounding! Worrisome! And spellbinding! If this were fiction I'd say it was written like a true nonfiction book. But alas! The dirty world of money laundering and crooks is exposed here.

Title: I've never been more reluctant over the fourth star

Review: Let me start with what I dislike and conclude with what I like.

1. The narrative falls between two stools. There's too much financial technicality for the non-specialist and not enough for the specialist (in which camp, I count myself). In particular, there are innumerable references to multi-million or multi-billion dollars worth of 'derivatives'. There's nothing like enough information for the non-specialist to understand what this actually means and equally nothing like enough information for the specialist to assess the risks involved.

2. Almost all the characters are presented as saints or sinners. This overt polarisation makes the narrative more comprehensible, but lacks credibility. Perhaps this is a bone tossed to the non-specialists, but is just not plausible to the financial specialist readers.

3. The nearest thing to a hero in the book is Bill Broeksmit, who - apparently - committed suicide. The story of his drug-addicted son trying to take revenge on his - apparently - uncaring mother and trying to milk his separate hacking of his parents' email accounts for money, revenge and closure about his father's death is presented in tabloid style. The reader is bombarded with details of his sex life, his clothing choices and his narcotics consumption - a serious distraction from the serious analysis of the failings of the bank.

ON THE OTHER HAND - the analysis of the bank's relationship with Donald Trump et fam. and the Russian connections is investigative journalism of the first order. Sadly, it's scattered throughout the book - I would have thought it would make a great consolidated section at the very end - but I have huge respect for the manner in which the author writes this up. It is satisfactory for both financial specialist and non-specialist. Without this, I'd have given the book 2: with it, I'm willing - albeit reluctantly - to go to 4.

Title: Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

Review: This book is more about Deutsche Bank’s ambitions to enter the mainstream of Wall Street banking firms and the mismanagement and lack of control that led to fraudulent activity and the suicide of several of its senior executives concerned about their role in covering up the bank’s malfeasance. Donald Trump is a bit player in this saga, and by no means central to the story - his presence seems to be based on getting his name and celebrity in the title and thereby selling more books. That is unfortunate, because the book holds up well without his presence.

Central to the story is Val Broeksmit, the son of a senior Deutsche Bank executive who committed suicide, and his quest to find out why his adoptive father took his life. The book is well researched and well written - in fact it reads very much like a corporate whodunit. Unfortunately, the answer to Val's question is that, ultimately, both nobody and everybody did it. The greed and cover ups were orchestrated by people up and down the corporate hierarchy - so the story does not really have a villain. As a result, the ending is a little unsatisfying. Deutsche Bank continues today, in a scaled back form, under new and more responsible leadership - but many of the culprits responsible for past mistakes are likely still in place.
