DESCRIPTION: Two couples, two close friends, one missing husband…Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.
Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for her husband, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.

REVIEW:

Author's last 6/7 books were all 4 stars; Local Woman Missing (‘21), When the Lights Go Out (‘18), Every Last Lie (‘17), The Good Girl (‘14), Pretty Baby (‘15) and Don't You Cry (‘16). One book, The Other Mrs (‘20), ended up with 3 stars - first 60% was 2 stars with the last 40% of the book getting 4 stars.

The description doesn’t thrill me, but I LOVE THIS AUTHOR ! Writing is great like always. Moves along very quickly. A little typical plot but the ending kept this book at 4 stars for me.

Review: So, while the premise itself wasn’t bad, there was something about the delivery that fell flat. Perhaps it’s because this work was preceded by powerhouses such as The Other Mrs. AND Local Woman Missing, page turners that both made you guess at the outcome, while providing surprises and plausible twists with every chapter.

Told from the point of view of two characters embroiled in a twist of fate, some characters aren’t developed well enough, or their plot line adds nothing to advance or develop the main one. The stalker/secret admirer subplot, for one, doesn’t add anything to the story. It could have been left out, as the outcome does nothing to build momentum or change the ending of the story. Why introduce it?

Also, the main characters do/say stupid things to get themselves into trouble, but only one of them is with rooting for from the get go. The story is biased from the beginning, and we pretty much know who’s going to make it to the end with a positive outcome. While not a bad book, it’s certainly not a page turner compared to her previous two works. I would have put this as an earlier work, or an idea that could have slowly simmered into a better domestic thriller.

Read it if you’ve read her other works and enjoy reading in general, but out of the four books I’ve read by this author, this is my least favorite.

Review: Not really sure how I feel about this book. The writing was good, the story was interesting. But I don't really like the direction the book took. Everything Christian and Lily did was like people who are guilty. I didn't like the ending and most of the characters I didn't like. But I did like Christian and Lily. I guess, it just shows what length people will go when they feel scared and worried.

Review: I do like Mary Kubica's books, and Just the Nicest Couple was no exception. However, I did find Just the Nicest Couple a bit "flat". Lily and Christian seem to love each other so very much, and this relationship would be the envy of any neighborhood. Nina and Jake also seem to have it all--success and prestige in the community. Lily and Nina are both teachers at the same school and very good friends. One day, Lily has quite the tale to emotionally deliver to Christian, and the two of them go to very great lengths to cover up the fact Lily may have killed Nina's husband. Twisty and many close calls where Nina almost finds out what Lily and Christian are working so hard to keep secret. Nina's mother is an added character in that Nina must now take care of her mother who is suffering eye disease and possible breast cancer. I love how Mary Kubica takes me one direction where I am convinced I know how the story is going to end, but then throws a huge boulder in the road forcing me into another direction.

Review: I've read most, if not all, of this author's books. This one held my interest from the first page. I did come close to figuring out the ending but was still left guessing till the end. Definitely would recommend.

Review: Overall the book was really good and enticing. The end, however, had a few loose ends that had me a little confused. The storyline is awesome.
