Karachi is bracing itself for the hottest week of the year with temperatures soaring up to 40 to 42 degrees Celsius. In order to prevent heatstroke, here’s what you need to do and how you can practically help yourself get through this heatwave.
The most important thing to do is to keep yourself well hydrated. Drink plenty of water during the day no matter how less thirsty you think you are. Avoid soda, coffee, tea or any other beverages as they cause dehydration. Watermelon, cucumbers, oranges and other water rich foods can also maintain your hydration levels.
Stay indoors as much as possible during the day as the temperature soars up mostly between noon to 4 PM. If you really have to head out, wear light and loose clothing and protect your head with a hat. Apply sunscreen with high SPF to avoid getting sunburned.
Keep the home cool by shutting curtains or blinds to avoid direct sunlight streaming in. Make use of fans and air conditioners if available. In case of a power breakdown which is usual in Karachi during heatwaves, open the windows on opposite sides to generate a cross-breeze.
Avoid exhausting activity or exercise during the hot hours of the day. If you are a daily exerciser, move your routine earlier in the morning or much later in the evening when the temperature is comparatively lower.
Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke which include elevated body temperature, confusion, rapid pulse and collapse. In case you experience these symptoms or notice anyone around you in such a condition, get medical attention immediately.
Lower your risks of heatstroke by taking these precautions seriously and of course stay indoors, drink plenty of water and keep cool. Take care, stay safe Karachiites!
