Title: Fantasy, folklore, and fantastic characters

Review: A Comb of Wishes set on a Caribbean island is rich in folklore and with beautifully written descriptions, so vivid you can even smell the island cooking. The main character, 12-year-old Kela is relatable as she struggles with the grief of losing her mother.

When the seawoman Ophidia offers her any wish in return for her comb that Kela wrongly took, she knows exactly what she wants. Ophidia warns her that wishes can have disastrous and unintended consequences, but Kela is undeterred. Her bargain with Ophidia proves costly and dangerous, and Kela must fight for her life and for those she loves.

This is a story with adventure and twists that keep the reader in its grip at all times. Kela’s strength and vulnerability make her a most authentic heroine. Ms. Stringfellow is a gifted storyteller.

I also purchased the audio version of A Comb of Wishes, and Bahni Turpin’s narration is one of the best I ever listened to. It is quite spectacular.

Title: A joy to read!

Review: A joy to read and a great book for young readers! I LOVED the girl protagonist and how she dealt with grief. A fantastic fiction that is a pleasure to read and shows the hero as a capable black girl, in contrast to so many books of the white boy hero. I was also touched by the author's note. I, too, would have loved to read this book when I was 12 year-old!

Title: Friendship & The Power of Storytelling

Review: A COMB OF WISHES is a magical story with characters who feel very real. Middle grade readers will identify with Kela, who tries hard and means well, but often realizes too late that she's made a bad choice. The relationships she has with some adults in her life were portrayed well, and her up-and-down friendship with her best friend was one of my favorite parts of the story. One of my other favorite parts was the setting -- a tropical island and a wind-swept sea. The setting often forced the characters to make certain choices, and it was described so well I feel like I've actually been there (even though it's a fictional island!)

Some of the chapters are told through the perspective of the sea woman/mermaid Ophidia. These were lyrical and haunting and beautifully done. I won't spoil the story by saying more, but Ophidia is one of those characters who grows more and more interesting as the book progresses. She and Kela learn much from each other. And I was still thinking about Ophidia days after I finished the book.

At its heart, the book is about storytelling -- the power of stories to sustain us during hard times, to pass on traditions, to remind us of what's important. Beautifully written, A COMB OF WISHES is a story that does all that. I used to help run a book club for middle school kids & I wish this book had been around then -- it would have been perfect!

Title: Sweet and exciting, all at the same time

Review: I loved this story... especially how the author doesn't pander to young readers, but instead tackles issues like grief and regret head-on. It was beautifully written, touching, and quite a ride! Action scenes, touches of magic, callbacks to folklore... This book has it all. Highly recommended for young and older readers alike. :-)

Title: A modern day Caribbean folktale of waves and wishes

Review: Comb of Wishes was a really great read. I purchased both the audiobook and the Kindle versions.

As middle grade fiction, it featured those classic touchstones (secret adventures, chases, outsized consequences, twists and heartbreak) and story beats that are both riveting and yet, not too frightening or gruesome. It however does not mean the emotional impact was any less powerful. I found myself tearing up at parts, and experiencing those nascent fears that something, once broken, might never be able to be fixed again. Many of the descriptions were wonderfully creative in their phrasing, highlighting the author’s love of prose.

Kela is a courageous protagonist filled with heart and drive. As a person of West Indian descent, the flourishes and details of culture, food and history woven into the story were extremely welcome and exciting to see as integral story elements. I loved the inner reflection around how she viewed the world before her wish, and how things felt afterwards. Whenever there is a wish fulfillment story, there are questions about time travel paradoxes and whether things might go back to exactly the way they were originally. But, the author managed to resolve many of these questions in a unique and moving way.

Throughout the story, there was never a glaringly false note in the telling of the tale or the responses of its characters (even if it led to tragedy). The mysteries that developed gave way to new mysteries and the final resolution was both satisfying and bittersweet. Overall, it was a great adventure that seems an instant stand alone classic and welcome addition to anyone’s fantasy library.

Title: A fun fantasy novel with a winning main character

Review: Beautifully written and compelling! I love the main character, Kela, who makes mistakes, learns from them, and feels very much like a real middle school-aged kid. The warm community of friends and neighbors around her made this book a cozy read, like spending time with an old friend, even though the plot was new and fresh. I loved it!
