When it comes to teaching children how to swim, keeping them engaged and interested is paramount. With their short attention spans and limited lesson time, it's crucial to make each session fun and interactive. One effective way to achieve this is by turning swimming skills into enjoyable games! While there are countless games available on the internet, here are a few that I have personally found to be highly effective.

Red Light, Green Light

This game is perfect for teaching kids how to kick their legs in the water. Consider using it as a warm-up activity or the first thing you do before getting in the pool. Start by having the children sit on the edge of the pool with their feet in the water. When you say "green light," they should kick as hard as they can. Then, when you say "red light," they should stop kicking. This game not only reinforces your instructor-child relationship but also helps improve their listening skills.

Talk to the Fish/Blow Out the Candle

Either of these games is a great way for kids to learn how to blow bubbles in the water. Start by asking them to pretend they are blowing out their birthday candle, then have them practice blowing bubbles with their lips in the water. As their confidence grows and they begin to go underwater, encourage them to "talk to the fish" and share what they said when they come back up. Children love using their imagination and telling stories to the fish!

Starfish/Pancake Flip

Teaching children how to float on their back and front can be challenging, especially when it comes to rolling over. Through my experience of teaching various kids, I have found two techniques that work exceptionally well. Start by telling them to hold a starfish pose on their back, being flat in the water with their arms and legs wide apart. This helps them understand how their body should feel while floating. To teach them how to flip from their back to their belly, ask them to pretend they are a pancake and sing the "Pancake Song" together. Kids love pretending to be pancakes, and when you say "flip," they can turn over onto their tummy. This allows them to practice rolling over and maintain the starfish pose on their front.

Ring/Coin Toss

Both of these games are fantastic for teaching kids how to swim deeper or retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool. Children enjoy showcasing their skills by diving down and bringing things back up. You can make it even more engaging by using rings of different colors and letting them choose how many and which ones they would like to retrieve. Giving kids a say in decision-making boosts their engagement and participation. Another great option is using different coins, as finding money at the bottom of the pool always brings joy!

Superhero Glides

Teaching superhero glides is a fun way for children to comprehend the concept of "streamlining" in the water. Let them choose the type of superhero they want to be, show you their superhero arms, and then practice gliding across the water. This not only makes the skill enjoyable but also helps them remember it by associating it with something fun! As they progress, you can introduce the proper terminology for the skills. Remember, repetition is key when teaching children multiple skills at once.

Ice Cream Scooping

This technique works wonders for teaching kids how to use their arms while swimming. Similar to superhero glides, it's an easy and enjoyable way for kids to learn proper arm movement. Start by letting them choose an ice cream flavor they would like to "scoop" for the day, and then have them practice taking big scoops in the water. It also helps to teach them to keep their fingers together, preventing water from passing through their hands. Initially, practice in one place, and as they become more proficient, encourage them to scoop their ice cream across the pool. Always emphasize that little scoops are never as satisfying as big ones!

Chop, Chop, Timber

Every child loves the exhilaration of jumping into the water, but some may have fears or reservations. To make this skill enjoyable, turn it into a game! Have the kids sit on the pool edge, pretending to be little seeds on the ground. Give them water (splash them) and sunshine (make a sun shape with your arms) so they can grow into big trees. Let them choose what type of tree they want to be, and then "chop" them down at the knees, encouraging them to jump into the water. Initially, they can hold both hands, one hand, or no hands as they jump. Let them decide, but if you feel they are ready to progress, give them the opportunity to jump independently.
