Review: I read this book in two days over the weekend and could not put it down. I absolutely love it. It’s a must-own for any level landscape artist or anyone just curious about plein air painting. I think I’d even enjoy reading it if I were only curious about painting in general, but as a practicing artist, this book will remain close by as a go-to reference along with Suzanne Brooker’s The Elements of Landscape Oil Painting and Richard Schmid’s Alla Prima II, which I also highly recommend.It’s a pleasure to read and provides thoughtful and timeless information on materials, values, composition, light and color, start-to-finish breakdowns, and so much more.There are a few stand-out paintings featured in the book, John McCormick’s “Western Wind” (p.100), Larry Gray’s ”2:00 at Saco Pass”(p.128), and Robert Marchessault’s “Kumada”(p.177) that literally made my jaw drop. I have rarely fallen into the beauty of printed images like I did with more than a few examples in this book. It is a work of Art in itself, full of so much useful information, exquisitely presented and explained.

Review: I studied art at a private college with excellent teachers, but never got the real technical training this book contains. It is an excellent book that I would highly recommend and I’m only in chapter three! The author does an excellent job covering both technical and inspirational aspects of landscape painting. I wish I had received this instruction in college.

This book explains the basics in an easy to understand way, with very good illustrations and examples. The book felt very comprehensive overall.I noticed a jump in the quality of my paintings after reading this. I am now asking myself questions that I wasn't before, which help my overall composition. I recommend this!

Review: This book is beautifully written, organized and printed. It is a pleasure to read even if you aren't a painter but merely someone wanting to know more about landscape painting. Mitch Albala has reduced the art of landscape composition and painting to their very essence. The writing is pristine, the illustrations and instruction are very clear. The large number of contemporary landscape painters used throughout the book as illustration introduce the reader to many contemporary landscape painters. I highly recommend this book.

Review: Written clearly by a thoughtful author, it has excellent information that every artist needs. Not condescending or simplistic, the book makes you think about all the things that should be considered to create an excellent painting, without being a step-by-step instruction book. A selection of different artists' work is used to illustrate different points which, to me, is more interesting than just seeing an author's. Open the book anywhere & there is that bit that you knew at one time and forgot. The book is my years of learning condensed between two covers. It never goes back on the shelf.

Review: If I could give this book 10 stars I would. I have probably read 10 art books in the past year and this is the best one by far. Mitchell Albala explains the fundamentals of creating art in a way that makes sense and gives examples to illustrate. I find myself going back to it again and again. Although the book is written primarily for landscape painting the principles can easily be applied to any subject and to any medium. If you were not lucky enough to go to art school or major in art in college, this book will fill in all the gaps.I know some of the other reviews criticized the book for not having the author's artwork on the cover. I disagree-the author's own work is very ethereal and would simply not make a good book cover, it has nothing to do with the author's own value as an artist. He's a very talented artist and lucky for us an even more talented art instructor. I would give just about anything to live nearby and take an art class from him. And it takes a confident, wise and student-driven person to use other artist's work to illustrate a point when he knows it will help his student more than using his own artwork.Thank you, Mr. Albala, for teaching me in this book all the things that my other art instructors didn't teach me but that I desperately needed to know!

Review: I am a beginning acrylic painter, and this book focuses largely on oils, but I still found it quite useful. It demonstrates how to look at the world as a painter and how to see what a natural scene might become as a painting--whether realistic or abstract. It also told me a great deal about plein air painting, which I had never really understood. Many of the techniques explained will work in either oils or acrylics as long as one takes into account the differences in drying times of the two media. The book includes many beautiful examples in full color and in some cases provides step by step process photos.
