Title: Misleading title - great book

Review: It seems as though the author started the book with the last chapter, the one on avoiding entrepreneurial pitfalls in healthcare, realized that in order to make his advice credible he needs to provide a background on recent healthcare trends and technologies, and then wrote a wonderful guide book to the complex US healthcare environment.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone joining the healthcare corporate world, whether in a provider (hospitals), payer (insurance companies) or vendor capacity. Whether it is your first job out of college, you transitioned from another industry, or moved within related industries such as Pharma or biotech, understanding the landscape is critical to your professional success.

I myself have 18 years of healthcare experience, and still found many useful nuggets, simply because the tectonic shifts since the 2009 HITECH act make it impossible to keep up with all the trends unless one takes a step back and looks at the industry as a whole. This book does that.

One word of caution though, this book is more of a guidebook than a standard business book. It can be read in one sitting, but it would be a bit like drinking from a fire hose, especially for the uninitiated. Do not be deterred, and keep this book in your library. It works great as a lasting reference tool, and I found myself looking up terms on a frequent basis.

Review: I originally read this book to help demystify certain areas of healthcare. What I got was a lot more. The author uses very clear language--though admittedly sometimes a bit technical in nature--to break down broad areas of healthcare, including history, perspective, current trends, challenges, and important terms/players in each. It is a concise way to get your beak wet in several subsectors, while going more in depth in others. Whether you are just interested in learning about new things, or if you are potentially considering investing resources into this Byzantine sector of our economy, you should benefit from reading this. Upon finishing, I felt instantly more well-versed in various areas. Look forward to an update or follow-up in the coming years.

Review: Disrupting Healthcare is one of the best book I have read that explains the overall North American Healthcare market. Narrated from the perspective of someone who wants to bring about a change to the most painful problems in Healthcare today. This book explores the space and the approach a new technology disruption should hold for a lasting change in Healthcare. It is quite hard to find a book with a refreshing look on what should be the relationship between the intention of healthcare entrepreneurs w.r.t their work. That unlike other areas healthcare is a broken system and it requires sincere entrepreneurs who deeply care to solve problems of the masses and make healthcare better for us be it through consumer technology or an enterprise service at a hospital.

Moreover this book has inspired, provided necessary foundation and insights into the working of healthcare systems that I can take with me into my entrepreneurial journey in Healthcare Technology.I will recommend this book to anyone with a budding interest in trying to understand healthcare systems either to get better equipped within their roles or trying to change the face healthcare by applying compassion, technology and understanding the context of care.

This book sits as a reference guide in my shelf that I can pick anytime to find insights for personal, interpersonal and systemic encounters that I have within the healthcare spectrum! I will very much like to see a second book from the author :)

Title: Clear, concise explanation of a complex industry

Review: I am relatively new to the IT Healthcare space and during the steep learning curve of joining an IT Healthcare player I sought out books to help me. I have read several and found Before Disrupting Healthcare to be my favorite. It’s an excellent primer to explain in clear terms how the various pieces fit together. It offers a lot of good references and Pallav does a great job of using natural language to explain complex things. I keep the bookmarked kindle edition handy to quickly lookup acronyms and quick explanations of concepts that elude me. Great job and highly recommended read.

Review: This is a great introduction to the progress and perils of healthcare delivery and integration of technology over the last two decades. The author has an amazingly accurate insight into the clinical world and how technology has impacted the delivery of care. As a nurse of over 15 years in the emergency room, trauma and burn intensive care units in three different states, current graduate student in informatics, I agree with his perspective as a hospital provider and future HIT professional. He does a great job of condensing the basics, current culture and challenges faced by both fields today. I feel it's an absolute must-read for those on the perimeter of healthcare and those pursuing healthcare innovation.
