Review: I'll give 5 stars to the first edition for CEHv7 but 4 stars for CEHv8 on 2nd Edition, only because the exam changed gears.I've taken both, and both editions are "on target" for v7. In v8, however, I passed again, having one of the "several timed sections on one topic" version of the exam, rather than all questions in one sitting version of exam. You do still need to know the major tools listed: how to use, expected results and how to interpret results.The reason I drop the 2nd edition to 4 stars (I wish I could give 4.5) is because:- I did not expect and got blindsided by almost 20% of the exam hitting on PKI/digital certificates/identity management. I will suggest an expansion on PKI, et al to a full chapter. In the meantime, please find a supplemental source to study these before you take your exam.- There were also a few (<5) questions on a specific "free" testing methodology that self-promotes 6 of its own certifications and related training programs (which of course cost money), and which article Wikipedia yanked in 2011 for spammy self-promotion. I do hope that this addition to v8 gets reconsidered and removed from future versions of the CEH by the EC|Council. I've only seen 2 pages or so on this in two recent books, hardly drawing your attention to it, and not in depth.- Web security questions require more actual knowledge of securing a web page, as one would obtain from the OWASP project pages, and "hands-on" practice doing so. Please also do supplemental study with OWASP materials.- There was also one chapter area that was surprising completely missing on my v8 exam.- Finally, there were no PowerPoint pictures on the exam (a distractor in v7 exam), and more "soft" questions without code samples.Matt Walker's 2nd edition could be revised to cover these areas, or an addendum posted on a forum such as www.cccure.org. Still, this is an excellent resource, coupled with DeFino. The Gregg book is also a good supplement. Do download the extra online McGraw-Hill LearnKey exam as referenced in the book, and/or the Practice Tests book. Do the same for the online exams mentioned in the other two book sources. With those, plus a PKI study source, and OWASP / hands-on web security, you'll do fine on the exam -- whichever version you receive.

Review: The author adds in some stories, history, and general trivia that makes the book an easier read. He even mentions things that may confuse people who are already in the business as some things on the test are not as they appear in real life, and these factoids are very much appreciated. I've read numerous technical books that aren't seated in real life very well, but this author does a good job of avoiding fallacy. There are some grammatical errors in the book that should have been caught before publishing, but I've seen a lot worse. I think I came across a couple technical inaccuracies too, but I can't remember what they were offhand, so they must not have been critical.I do get the impression that the author is a hardcore Windows user and has never programmed before, so I'm a little disappointed about the book (or moreover the CEH exam) on that front, but this is because I'm admittedly biased against doing security work in Windows. Most attackers are using Linux, so I don't see why people on the other side of the spectrum wouldn't follow suit. He also mentions various times that a GUI interface for a CLI tool is probably preferred, which actually irritated me a bit. You can't point-and-click your way through security. If you think you can, I certainly wouldn't want to work with you.After reading the book, I don't consider the CEH certification to be of much practical use other than something to go on a resume. I believe that it's going to be a beast for me to pass, but that's because I'm already into the security realm at work and have predefined notions that I'll have to unlearn. I've also been focused on learning things for practical use over memorization of trivial information. Creating and modifying tools is what I'm really interested in improving, but unfortunately the CEH exam looks like it's going to be too focused on how to use specific functions with specific tools, rather than how they actually work. I've been a Linux admin for years, and I find it ridiculous to memorize flags just for the sake of memorization. This is what man pages are for. I kept on getting the feeling like I'm studying to become a certified script kiddie, but that's just my personal opinion. In all fairness, this is a technical guide nonetheless with crucial business and political information to boot.I'm taking the exam in 7 days, so I'll have to update this review with my results. If this review reads a little sour, it's because I'm required to take the exam for work. I've always wanted to take it, but man is it not what I had expected. I'm fully planning on taking the OSCP this year, which I hear is actually fun.UPDATE: I barely passed the CEH exam. It was a disappointing exam to take. There were two misspelled words and a lot of nonsense questions. You'll learn a lot studying for the CEH, but I honestly would have been furious if I spent my own money to take it. Sure, it may look good on your resume for some places, but I wouldn't consider it a very credible certification, especially at theses prices. I felt as though all of the questions were reworded over and over again to avoid people studying brain dumps.

Review: FAR, far too wordy!!! The author tries for a casual, chatty writing style, but I'm really getting tired of wading through all of the "witty" (?) repartee. One absolutely verbatim example from page 127 "A switch looks outwardly, much like a hub: It's a box with a lot of blinky lights, ports for connecting machines on the front, and a power cord in the back." What??? Do we really need this in a CEH book? One would assume that the CEH student has been around the world of computers long enough that the blinky light discussion is no longer relevant.Like others, I am looking for a concise guide to an exam, not a series of off-topic memories, cheerful asides, pages of pointless drivel about stuff that will not be on the test. I have a limited amount of time to study, and it irritates me to waste my study time on this. I have started skipping the sidebar sections entirely, and skimming the main body of the text to get past the fluff. Additionally, the author skips over some topics that you NEED for the exam. There is no mention of CSRF at all. Not in the index, not in the glossary, nothing. There are several exploits that are overlooked, and things like SLE are glossed over with a one line reference in the glossary. But he spends the better part of a page discussing the plot of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption". Go figure.With that said... you can find useful CEH stuff in this book if you persevere. It's just buried deeply. I estimate that about 25 - 30% of the book could be cut with no loss to testable material. Maybe if he did that, it would leave room for discussions of CSRF, etc.
