Title: for all the great reviews; this book is a mess

Review: I'm absolutely dumbfounded as to how this book got such rave reviews to be honest.

At best, it regurgitates already known psychological truths that were brought to light decades before this text.

At it's worse, it's a perfect example of someone who wants to sound legitimate by purposefully writing in an obfuscated, jargon filled, philosophical manner that lends itself poorly to it's purpose. I caught myself literally saying out loud, "Dude, get to the point already" or "What in the...is she talking about"?

I'm not much of a grammar geek, but when someone tries this hard I become so critical so as to point out every grammatical error and believe it or not, there are many.

I'd say the best part of the book is the catchy cover, outside that, it's not worth a look.

Title: Excellent book in understanding the behavior of markets

Review: Most traders, whether novice or experienced, at some point deal with the emotions of trading and investing. Novices will shrug off the psychology of trading as not being important. Others who say they are experienced feel they have conquered their emotions, or are looking for a roadmap to controlling emotions. Those who truly want to make themselves and their trading business truly better will embrace the concepts in this book. I approached the book with a good bit of skepticism. As I delved into it, I was most pleased with the way Denise weaved fictional characters into the presentation of her material. It has long been established that traders must control their emotions. Yet, Denise presents the fact that we are emotional beings and controlling emotions is difficult if not impossible. However, by embracing our emotions and understanding our emotions, instead of ignoring them, we can cross a divide that increases the probability of success in the investment world. In fact, I have taken the principles offered in the book and have applied them to other areas of my life only to find increasing benefits. Most people look for an answer, a technique, or whatever they feel will bring them success in trading. The answer, as described in the book, is really in understanding our own emotions when approaching the markets. Since reading the book, not only has my trading improved dramatically but, after years of trying to control emotions, I allow them to reveal themselves, in trading and in other areas of life. This has given me more complete understanding of how I interpret information coming from the market and what emotions drive me to enter, exit or stand aside. This is an excellent book. I urge anyone who reads it to take time with it and think through it carefully. After reading the first couple of chapters, I found myself reading, contemplating the material, applying it to my own trading and then moving on. I am very pleased I took the time to really indulge myself in the material Denise offers.

Title: So insightful into the positive power of emotions in achievement

Review: As a full time trader for over 20 years, I found this book to be enlightening, encouraging, and deeply insightful. We are all emotional beings and when navigating the chaos of the markets our emotional states can be exacerbated often to an uncomfortable level. However, conventional wisdom in trading says don’t have have emotions, suppress them, deny them. As an emotional trader who has never had much luck merely suppressing my very nature, I have always found this advice nearly impossible. Denise Shull takes a radically different approach in this book by validating those emotions and showing you how to redefine them and rechannel them in a proactive fashion to your advantage. She validates and empowers us to explore our emotions to give us power to find new levels instead of stuffing a significant portion of who we are in a box. Her work is radical in its departure from old tired convention and genius in its scope and application to finding higher levels of performance. Anyone in pursuit of elite levels of performance can find great application in what Denise teaches in this book. I highly recommend it!!

Title: A Veritable Rosetta Stone of Trading Psychology

Review: This book impressed me. Ms. Shull delivers on the word "Radical" in the title. She has no problem serving up some of trading's sacred cows, medium rare. In particular, she shows from a neuroscientific perspective how the mantra of "Plan the trade, trade the plan" is problematic. How? By showing how it eats up emotional capital.

In its place she shows why the notion of emotional capital is important, and just as with regular capital, it is essential to preserve if you want to stay in the game.

A word of caution though. The real Rosetta Stone didn't magically make all of ancient Egyptian culture instantly accessible, but it did provide a framework for subsequent efforts which over time expanded our knowledge of history. Similarly, don't expect this book to transform you overnight into someone who Jack Schwager will be trying to get a hold of.

What it can do though is help those who respect the importance of personal psychology in trading (a minority IMHO) to better understand their makeup and develop internal strategies for success. (As opposed to the majority who think finding the perfect external strategy is the way to go. Such irony that it's the wetware on the inside driving those efforts in the first place!)

I think it is important to talk about the format of the book. If you are expecting a "Dummies Guide to my Trading Brain" with lots of neat bullet points, you will be sorely disappointed. Instead the format is somewhat meandering. I have heard participants in webinars say they didn't like the format as they were reading the book, but by the end they felt it made sense. I actually enjoyed reading the book, but regardless I believe the format is in part trying to illustrate the concept Ms. Shull puts forward called "Fractal Emotional Context."

Normally I cringe when I hear someone using the word fractal out of its proper mathematical context. I have a great respect for Benoit Mandelbrot, and can still recall as a pimply teenager in the early 80's holding a copy of "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" and just knowing I had something great in my hands. I still have the book, but since then it seems the term "fractal" has become one of the top 5 words used to peddle trading wares. Just Google up "fractal trading indicator" and you will get 479,000 results.

With all of that said, I think Ms. Shull's use of the term "Fractal Emotional Context" is both appropriate and very illustrative. When you sit down to trade, everything from what you said over breakfast to how you were treated as a child is there with you. Just as market action has activity on all time frames, so do you. And more of what is swirling around in there is unconscious than conscious.

But this is a good thing. Ms. Shull also reminds us that everyone else is in a similar boat, and suggests ways to use this paradigm to develop an edge.

I find a lot of investing/trading books problematic, where all too often a desire to "preach to the choir" (often a greedy choir not willing to do their homework) seems to win out. This book is a vivid exception to that notion.

It is clear Ms. Shull wrote this book because she believes in the concepts she presents and feels she can make a contribution to those who are serious about trading. I strongly agree with her ideas and feel lucky I came across her work.
