In compiling this book on Blacksmith work, I have in mind the many little difficulties which arise from time to time in this class of work. In my own experience, and also in that of my fellow workmen, problems both of time saving and labour saving have had to be solved, and the tricks of the trade and wrinkles which have been learned thereby, are passed on in this book to anyone who can make use of them. Review: This is a great book for someone who already has experience with blacksmithing. Industrial forging was/is a complicated process and some of the content of this manual could be lost on a beginner.

However, if you are a beginner this book still has value because it is really thorough with the diagrams showing how metal is draw down into useful forms, especially in the second half of the book. It just may not all make sense right away. It's useful to remember that this is a book that was printed for working blacksmiths as a reference, not for hobbyists trying to hammer out their first project. If you want to make hooks or bottle openers you don't really need this book.

If you're at a level where you're proficient enough to make your own tools - hammers, swages, set tools etc. (maybe you have a power hammer) - then this book is extremely valuable. It provides detailed steps for complicated forms and will be a valuable reference. If you're really into forging, this is a book you should have.

One critique is that the diagrams don't have the name of the object they're describing, just a number. You have to flip around sometimes to make sure you're reading the correct description. It's not well organized.

Review: In response to some previous reviews critical of the lack of detailed text in this manual, please remember that this book was written in 1930 by a blacksmith FOR blacksmiths. "Hobby" smithing was unknown - unthinkable in fact (learn a trade just for the fun of it?!?!) - before the 1960's. As a full time professional blacksmith, I find that this book contains much useful information. If you are a professional, you'll "get it"... if you're a hobbyist, it will depend on your experience... either way, read the book, study the drawings carefully, then do the only thing that will ever truly give you understanding as a smith: light a forge and hit hot iron until you get it right.

Review:
A excellent book though unusual. It is more pictures than text and very conceptually oriented. This is for serious and advanced smiths rather than beginners. Lots of ideas and inspiration but only a little "how to" sort of info. More useful to industrial smiths than backyard smiths.

Review: For $28.45 I was expecting substantially more from this book. Quite a let down. If I had seen the actual size of this book before ordering I would not have been willing to pay more than $10 for it, even that much seems a bit much for a little book like this.
