Causes of Black Spots on Your Navel (Belly Button)

According to Healthline, the navel also called the umbilicus or belly button is the remaining part of the umbilical cord that is cut at birth. It is a body part that comes in different shapes and sizes and could often have black spots. Below are three causes of black spots on the navel.

1. Accumulation of dead skin cells

Dead skin cells accumulating around the navel might result in black patches. The belly button can become darker due to the folds' ability to collect sweat, dead skin cells, and other microbes. These dead skin cells can occasionally build up and create a huge blackhead-like nodule in the navel entrance that is hard, stone-like, and painful. An omphalolith is the name for this ailment, which if untreated, can be uncomfortable or painful. To avoid the accumulation of dead skin cells and minimize the formation of black spots, practice good hygiene and clean your belly button frequently.

2. Increased melanin production

Additionally, black spots on the navel can result from increased melanin synthesis. This is typical to pregnant women caused by an increase in melanin concentration. During pregnancy, the production of melanin (skin pigment) is heightened by estrogen and progesterone resulting in the visibility of the linea nigra, a black vertical line that appears on the belly of a pregnant woman. Hence, the presence of black spots on the navel of the woman is a consequential effect. Although this is peculiar to pregnant women, a slight imbalance in melanin production in a person's body system may warrant black spots on the umbilicus.

3. Medical Disorders

Black spots on the navel can also result from microbial infections and other medical disorders. If there is pain, redness, or discharge along with the spots, it is crucial to speak with a medical expert as this could be a sign of an underlying medical illness.

Having known these, it is best to ensure that your navel/belly button is clean at all times to prevent the buildup of microbes as well as maintain personal hygiene. Medical practitioners advise that you use warm water and bathing soap to clean the navel while bathing or use a mixture of warm water and salt then pat it dry afterward.
