A BRIEF HISTORY OF KALISOSOK PRISON, SURABAYA

Built in 1750, since the time of the 'Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie' (VOC) trade partnership. It is a prison that was used actively during the Dutch to Japanese colonial period. During the revolution in 1945, the prison experienced the 'Captain Huijer' incident, namely the event when the allied representative set foot for the first time in the city of Surabaya to become the location where the fighters were detained. Kalisosok Prison used to be the detention center for important figures for Indonesian independence such as Soekarno, Wage Rudolf Supratman, Kiai Haji Mas Mansur, HOS Cokroaminoto, and other prominent figures. Located in North Surabaya, Kalisosok Prison was built during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. The building now looks old, it's on the edge of the main road, it doesn't get much attention from motorists.

Historically, almost all Indonesian freedom fighters have experienced the cruelty of the Kalisosok prison. Especially during the period from 1940 to 1943 when we were still struggling to liberate ourselves from the cruelty of Japan. Before independence, this underground prison exile was still often used to imprison convicts. But after 1945, the basement was no longer used. This prison is indeed touted as the place that convicts are most afraid of because the place is cramped, dark, and stuffy. Just imagine in one room with a capacity of only 20 people, forced to be occupied by 90 people. The walls between the chambers were also made so thick that even a nail could not be driven in there. Previously this underground prison was also used as a place of torture, so it is not surprising that until now the local people often hear voices screaming for help every night from within the prison walls. Even now, almost everyone who passes through it will instantly get goosebumps because it is so sad that this prison is.
