You don’t earn a living from sitting at your computer doing meaningless work in order to keep the illusion of self-worth intact. In fact, you are not even making any money from being on Earth because you’re so bored and lonely that you would prefer having an actual body instead of just thinking about it. Yet we still consider our “work” as productive if just one person looks and writes the other day. And if there is no way for us to communicate with each other about these things that bring us value, then why do we even bother? Why do we need to talk about them, while they exist right in front of us, only visible to all of us (and maybe some humans outside of our species)? So what was the point of talking about them in order to keep people from going into depression on their own? What good is that but for those who are more successful than we are at least to try doing something more valuable. There are many people who have reached middle age who never had enough money or health insurance to be able to afford the luxury of taking care of yourself. They could not buy the life they wanted or they could barely afford rent or they did not go hungry as often as others. Instead, they chose to stay in place until they retired (which didn’t happen). The same thing can happen to you if you’re lucky enough to find someone who cares for you, even if sometimes you cannot control if he/she will take better care of himself or herself or the child they’ve only just begun to love. You will feel good about this life, at least compared to the rest of your lives, since you see that you do not need the safety of a full retirement. That’s not how most people live: in constant fear of death or of running out of time and resources. But don’t worry; I won’t tell you how to get wealthy. If anything, I will scare you away from trying. Let me show you where you should focus your efforts and what kinds of opportunities are available you. One big part of the goal of my book is showing people what it actually takes to achieve financial independence. This includes understanding what freedom is, what it feels like, and what kind of problems it causes, before getting involved in what matters most in life. It is a dream with few limits, since there is nothing to stop anyone from achieving it. On the contrary, if you want more freedom, you will face many obstacles, including psychological ones. Once you get clear about the meaning of that word, you will get motivated to start working towards it. How important is happiness? Most people think that there is little value in pursuing pleasure: the feeling of joy and satisfaction is considered useless and even unhealthy. However, happiness has a lot of advantages. For example, it promotes your ability to enjoy being alive, and you feel happy when you exercise, sleep, and eat well. Happiness brings a sense of accomplishment and self-worth; it means that you don’t need to depend on anybody else’s approval to be happy. Besides, happiness does not have any negative effects; rather, it makes it possible for you to look back at your life to see how far you’ve come and how far you’ve come along. A study found that having high levels of happiness during adulthood was linked with higher levels of success in old age. Similarly, research showed that happiness made it possible for young adults to overcome stress and become healthier without receiving medical treatment. These benefits appear because of happiness, not the mere absence of pain or discomfort. People who do not feel happy enough are less likely to use health care services, even if they are sick. It turns out that if somebody is unhappy about something, the brain doesn’t know what to do with him/her, and it reacts with the opposite reaction: the person becomes angry, depressed and stressed out. All of this explains that happiness is very useful for physical and mental health, but also for the quality of life.
