We were eager, we were anxious, and we all had one thing in common as we introduced ourselves to each other�we knew we�d earned being there, but we still couldn�t quite believe it. �Jerry began the morning by having the Sharks and the Jets assemble onstage. Then he planted himself in front of us and announced, �Okay, we�ve got three weeks to do this, so let�s get to work. I want the Sharks over here [he pointed stage left] and the Jets over there [he pointed stage right].� He then made it very clear that he didn�t want the Sharks and the Jets socializing with each other before, during, or after rehearsals. �I�ve always thought that was so smart of him. For one thing, he was working with a bunch of relatively inexperienced young people and making it clear who was in charge. For another thing, it was an inspired way to help create the tension between the two rival gangs that he needed from us onstage. That tension is essential. Without it, West Side Story just plain doesn�t work. And to deepen our understanding of the underlying territorial, combative mentality of the Sharks and the Jets, he insisted that we all read a book about juvenile delinquency that came out earlier that year, The Shook-Up Generation by Harrison Evans Salisbury. Jerry demanded depth and authenticity from us, and we loved him for it. �Those three weeks of rehearsals at the Winter Garden were brutally challenging. I was completely overwhelmed. I left the theater exhausted every day, thinking, I�m never going to learn all this. But the alternative was not learning it and being replaced, and no way did I want that to happen. I knew I was launching into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I desperately wanted to be up to the task. �Somehow, three weeks later, ready or not, we gave our first performance, for an audience made up of the Broadway community.
