Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates it. (David Hume)
I like "substitution integral" in mathematics. I think it is a very beautiful way of calculation. I enjoy sharing this feeling with students who like mathematics. However, when I say "beautiful" to students who are not good at mathematics, I cannot share my feelings with them.
Why is that? It is for a very simple reason.
It is a problem in the mind of the student who sees it.
It is a problem in the mind of the student who sees it. And there is no way a prep school teacher can change that mind.
I am sure many of you have had the experience of hearing the lyrics of a song you heard as a child, but when you listen to it again as an adult, you hear a completely different meaning. There must be many people who have had such an experience. Why do they sound different even though the lyrics are the same and the voice is the same? It is because they have grown up inside through their experiences.
