Rule one is to stand tall and square your shoulders. Rule two is to treat yourself as though you were in charge of assisting a number three, which is closely related to rule two. These two rules are essentially variations on the theme of making friends with those who have your best interests in mind. By the way, these final two rules aren't directives meant to make your life simpler; rather, they're injections meant to make it more challenging. In the past, Kierkegaard expressed his belief that, if things continued to get easier, people would eventually cry out for hardship. This is partially how he saw his function in the world at that point.
