The medical term "dyspareunia" refers to the chronic or repeated pain that women endure during sexual activity. It describes pain that may be felt in the genitalia prior to, during, or following penetration. A woman's intimate relationships and sexual well-being can be adversely affected by dyspareunia, which can be distressing.

Two primary forms of dyspareunia exist:

1. Superficial Dyspareunia: This kind of dyspareunia is characterized by pain in the external genital area or at the vaginal opening. It is frequently linked to ailments like skin diseases, inflammation, vaginal infections, and dryness. Trauma, scarring, or diseases such as vulvodynia, which is characterized by persistent pain or discomfort in the vulvar region, can also cause superficial dyspareunia.
