Review: I purchased this book for research for a project I had to do and was blown away by the amount of pictures and great photography and material they had in it. Great anectdotes about one of the lost periods of our time, the East India Company.Amazing book, would recommend to those who wish to know more about this great period in World History.

Review: I bought this source for part of a lengthy paper on the East India Company. I anticipated something of merit. Something to go with my other secondary sources. Instead, I got something very different. There are no citations in this book beyond picture credits. In fact, the author himself even tries to justify this with the introduction:"This book covers over 250 years and touches five continents: it contains little original research, as virtually every aspect of the Company's history has been covered minutely (and in separate volumes) by a number of historians over the years. What I have attempted to do, however, is to weave together the threads of their specialist knowledge into a general whole."So far, not too crazy. It's a secondary source on the East India Company, and that's what I was looking for. But then:"My scavenging has left the half-digested fruits of their own original research scattered throughout the text; I can only hope that they do not feel disgraced by their unacknowledged association with this book. To them I owe the greatest debt."To be honest, I did not read this at first. I looked at the table of contents, blindly trusting that this was like my other secondary sources, with citations and all. Instead, I got weirdly phrased passages and biases written from an edgy new "perspective". Here's one such example from page 140 on Clive and Plassey: "Like a fixed wrestling bout, the outcome of the Battle of Plassey was predetermined by the backroom deals struck by Clive, and the great victory was no more than a sham." There are many other instances of an almost hostile tone taken with the East India Company's actions, and it is difficult to see why. Fortunately, I did not have to read the entire book.Overall, do not buy this book. The author is no historian and openly admits to paraphrasing (and potentially even plagiarizing) from a multitude of unnamed authors. The whole point of writing about history is to back up your information with actual, historical facts, and provide the reader with a roadmap (with citations and a bibliography). Your own interpretations on the data are fine, as long as your data is backed up with sources. I suspect the only reason the author even deigns to give credit where credit is due for the photographs and paintings is because he simply could not get away without it. It's possible this was even a publisher demand and his intent was to not give credit, maybe he was hoping that those who authored the relevant pictures and paintings "do not feel disgraced by their unacknowledged association with this book."This book is an affront to other good history sources on the East India Company. Look into Ian Barrow's The East India Company (2017). It is not exhaustive, but it is far better than this rambling atrocity. Dr. Barrow's work also includes a small selection of relevant primary sources.

Review: This book is deserving than more than just 5 stars.As a historian myself, the biggest problem in expressing yourself is making "old" topics informative and interesting to modern generations. Antony Wild has succeeded beyond any scale of recognition in his book The East India Company: Trade and Conquest from 1600.This book, which details the English East India Company's history will appeal to anyone with an interest in British, Indian, Asian, American, military, nautical, or commerical history-- it is that wide-ranging. This book is also a must-read for anyone interested or concerned over the so-called modern phenomenon of "globalization." After reading Wild's account, one can see that globalization has been around for nearly four hundred years, if not longer.The English East India Company, acting under a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I, sought entry into the Spice Trade in Asia. Soon, however, it found itself involved with Indian piece trade and trade from the Middle East and Arabia. Its trade interests in India eventually led to de facto conquest and colonization on that subcontinent-- all with the tacit support of the crown. The company reached into China and even North America-- it was East India Company tea that got dumped into Boston Harbor during the Tea Party.The company exported and imported goods, laid the foundations for three important Indian cities, fought land wars and naval battles with other European merchant powers or local natives, and brought a host of new products and new words into the consciousness of the English-speaking world.India proved to be the company's lasting legacy, and not always a positive one. However Wild provides a well-balanced account that does not paint the company as either completely ethical traders or imperialistic devils. No matter one's opinion, India proved to the company's (and Britain's) largest asset and also the cause for the company's eventual dissolution.The book is well-illustrated and is an easy but very informative read. I would rank this amongst the top 10 books I have read in the last 5 years.
