US cities are faced with the joint challenge of our climate crisis and the lack of housing that is affordable and healthy. Our housing stock contributes significantly to the changing climate, with residential buildings accounting for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. US housing is not only unhealthy for the planet, it is putting the physical and financial health of residents at risk. Title: A must read for city planners, builders, and anyone who lives or works in a building of any kind.

Review: After reading this book, I ordered it for a friend of mine who is a commercial building project manager working along the eastern seaboard. Not only does the author offer multiple insights via her top-down approach to solving the problems inherent in gray building practices, but her practical, common sense bottom-up approach to solving these problems is enormously helpful and encouraging. All interested in not only contributing to the fight to stop climate change, but also in further understanding the insidious reach of policies and practices that contribute to racial inequities in housing, should read this hopeful book. And then gift it to a builder...

Using a combination of data, personal stories, and examples, the book articulates how these issues interrelate and, more important, steps we can take to resolve them.
Bourland clearly explains the health, environmental and financial benefits that accrue from the energy-efficient retrofits of our nation’s housing stock.

Review: In Gray to Green Communities, Dana Bourland makes the case for how we can fight climate change, improve community health, and enable people to have safe, affordable homes – and she succeeds! Dana uses her more than two decades as a change agent to bring forward vibrant stories about people, data, and strategies to present a very accessible picture of what the problem is, why we need to act, and what we need to do. This is a book for every citizen, practitioner, politician, and policy wonk to read – if they didn’t have concern for their own health, community, and environment before absorbing this book, they will after. If they were already on the “gray to green” train before reading it, they will be recommitted to doing something. At the end of the day, Dana is telling us to move beyond, studying, talking, and debating – without meaningful action infused with public purpose and long-term systemic strategic frameworks, we are facing an unnecessarily dim future.

Dana Bourland has a unique personal and professional experience to connect the dots of housing, climate change, and public health. She masterfully weaves in stories of individuals and families whose lives have improved after transitioning out of "gray" housing, into "green" homes. The book is not based on theory, it demonstrates that green housing works! This was not just a great read, it is the right plan.

Review: For a private citizen trying to understand the complex issues surrounding affordable housing and environmental health, this book brings it all together. Ms. Bourland makes clear the intersection of climate change, health, racial inequity and poverty and brings her passionate expertise to offer a path forward. This was an enlightening read for me and will be a top recommendation for my peers and community leaders, in fact I ordered an extra copy just to lend out!

Review: Dana Bourland shares her insider's knowledge of how sustainability became a must-have for affordable housing over the past 15 years, and points the way for where we need to go even more urgently: Despite the work of so many, we still have a crisis of affordability in the US, which will only complicate the challenge of responding to the climate emergency. There is no just solution to the climate emergency that leaves out housing everyone in safe, affordable, and green homes!

Title: What is so inspirational about this book

Review: What is so inspirational about this book is that it maps how green and healthy design became a very widespread design strategy for low income. And it demonstrates that green and healthy design is not just for the well off but actually over time is the lower cost design option since it cuts energy and water bills, reduces health costs, extends building life and provides other measurable benefits. Given this, the question is why would any low income design now not be green and healthy - after all, it is now clear that conventional unhealthy non-green design is both higher cost and just plain dumb.

Review: This book is fantastically timed - it outlines HOW every person and practitioner should think about housing and climate - that healthy, quality housing is as a human right. It defines how "housing has been the physical demonstration of the racist systems embedded in our country", and how that thinking and approach in our society is what is also destroying the earth. It provides practical examples and solutions for how we should do business in real estate differently, and outlines examples of how this impacts lives! Read it please - this should be the norm.
