Title: Understanding The Trans World

Review: As you can imagine living the life of a trans person is rife with difficulty. The author, Precious Brady Davis, tells her story from a troubled childhood, born as a male, and through her quest to become a woman.

Born Nathaniel, he and his two siblings were taken from his mother at an early age They lived in several homes until their grandfather adopted them and gave them the semblance of a normal life. Uprooted several times, living with different relatives,Nathaniel knew he was destined to become a woman. Understanding his complete family took awhile. A background of religion that became born again and turned into strange ways. Nathaniel graduated high school and went onto a Community College and the University. Defining himself as gay and as a woman, he went on to performing gay drag and was very successful. While in college Nathaniel was good, performing every night on stage with his colleagues.

When the real world entered his life, Nathaniel became Precious Jewel. She had a social life, met a man who identified as trans male, fell in love, and they married. She has entered the corporate world and works as a diversity specialist. She and Myles have a daughter, and continues with her drag career at times. Precious looks back at her life, how she overcame some of the difficulties, and her performing life.

Precious has given us a look at her life, and how she dealt with prejudice as a black gay man and as a black gay woman. Her transition, her thought process is quite open. I found a new respect for Precious and her colleagues. She is living the life she chose, literally. A difficult process, but as they say she persevered.

Imagine a whole party mobilized in denying who you are and denying you your right to play sports.

Title: I don't know you but I Love you !

Review: This is a story that needed to be told. How brave and courageous you and Myles are for telling your truth, especially you. As an 65 yr old black lesbian woman who has been in a same sex relationship for 41 years with the same person I can emphasize with yours and many others who have fought to live unapologetically in their truth.
The struggle has been brutal at times. Growing up in a Christian household made coming out a psychological nightmare for me in the 70's and 80's. Growing up in Philadelphia, Pa made it somewhat tolerable because there was a large gay community here, but in the beginning as a woman I felt so alone. My best friends were gay men and I find it totally ironic that my first introduction into the "life", was through my gay male choir members that sang on a gospel choir with me. We would sing until the whole church was shouting, leave church and go to the club !
Thank you so very much, this story touched places I usually hold deep inside. The tears I shed while remembering so many of those that have crossed over because of HIV or age, the protest we marched in while attending college. If it wasn't about GAY rights we were marching for abortion rights, women's rights for equality. It seemed like we were begging for the right to just have the same constitutional liberties that the " white men" were enjoying but we were barely getting crumbs. Thank you for helping me to remember. Our fight is not over. Now it's up to the next generation to continue fighting so that we don't lose what we've already fought for.

Title: This is a biography, not a memoir

Review: I got this book as one of Amazon's first reads, and I was excited for this to be my Pride month read. Unfortunately, I was unable to finish the book. At halfway through, I have to call it quits.

The biggest reason is because I have no idea what the point of this story is. It sounds like I'm just reading Precious' life story, in chronological order, with no real message that I should be getting out of it. Each chapter, there are names dropped and details mentioned and the most frequent thought I had was, "Why is she telling me this? What am I supposed to get out of that event? Is there something I'm supposed to learn? Is the message going over my head?" After reaching the halfway mark, I realized, the author isn't trying to teach me anything. She is just telling us her biography.

A memoir is supposed to have an author recounting detailed memories filled with imagery that all come together in some way to teach the reader a specific message. A biography is a story about someone's life. This book is a biography. I wasn't being taught anything, except perhaps the lived experience of a specific biracial, trans woman. But what is it about Precious that should make me want to read about her life? What sets her apart? What makes her different? And most of all, what is the takeaway that I should get from her story? I wasn't getting anything.

My biggest gripe is that the writing tells me a lot, but it doesn't show me anything. Every story is told like a biography. To paraphrase the writing style, "I was born here. I had this many siblings. I did this. And then I did this. And my friend told me this, so I did this." There were barely any moments that painted a picture and sparked my imagination about what was going on. It was all too this happened, then this happened. Show me a story; don't tell it to me.

And that ties right into me not being sure what to take away. By showing a story, I can get the tone, themes, and motifs the author is trying to convey to me. I can feel what the memoirist feels, experience what she experiences. Instead, it was like I was simply listening to her tell me about her life. And at this point, I have to say, "Gurl, it's been a nice chat, but I've got to go!"
