What does it mean to “think Orthodox”? What are the unspoken and unexplored premises and presumptions underlying what Christians believe? Orthodox Christianity is based on preserving the mind of the early Church, its phronema. Dr. Jeannie Constantinou brings her more than forty years’ experience as a professor, Bible teacher, and speaker to bear in explaining what the Orthodox phronema is, how it can be acquired, and how that phronema is expressed in true Orthodox theology—as practiced by those who are properly qualified by both training and a deep relationship with Christ.

While I enjoyed the book very much and benefited from it, I sometimes also felt the familiar frustration that I experience when I hear cradle Orthodox try to talk about Protestantism. Just as it is very difficult for us in the West fail to comprehend the Orthodox phronema, Dr. Constantinou and other Orthodox theologians have a very difficult time understanding mainline Protestantism, reducing a rich and nuanced tradition to a few simplistic catchphrases phrases which they do not fully understand: “sola scriptura” or “once saved always saved” or “faith alone.” In my years at a Lutheran elementary school, Lutheran high school, Lutheran college, and Lutheran seminary, I never encountered the strange views that Dr. Constantinou routinely attributes to “Protestants.” Those accusations would also sound bizarre to Anglicans or Presbyterians or Methodists or members of any mainline Protestant faith tradition. (I actually first heard about “the rapture” from an Orthodox podcast which, to my astonishment, described it as something “Protestants” believe.)

The truth is that the clearly stated goal of Martin Luther and the mainline reformers was to restore the one, true, catholic, and apostolic faith of the early church as defined by the church fathers. Luther understood that in the years following the split between the Eastern and Western churches the Latin church had introduced innovations and heresies that were alien to the early church and the fathers. He also said repeatedly that “Greek Christians” had preserved the purity of the faith, and he rejected the views of the radical reformers as vigorously as any Orthodox theologian. In defining their understanding of the ancient faith in the Book of Concord, the Lutherans constantly referenced the fathers: Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Cyprian, Anthony of Egypt, Athanasius, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, Augustine, and many others. The claim that “Protestants” make use only of their own personal interpretations of Scripture is demonstrably untrue. As Orthodox Christians, we pray every day for the “unity of the faith.” How can we sincerely pray for unity when at the same time we are not careful to represent the views of our fellow Christians fairly and accurately? For those interested in exploring Protestant Christianity, I would recommend reading Protestants themselves--writers such as C.S. Lewis or George MacDonald--or, still better, to read the actual confessional documents of mainline Protestantism, such as the Augsburg Confession or the Thirty-nine Articles. Dr. Constantinou is at their best when simply presenting the Church and its traditions in all of their beauty and richness--when she is simply extending the invitation to Protestants and others to explore Orthodoxy, to “come and see.” I would urge readers of Dr. Constantinou’s book also to listen to her wonderful program on Ancient Faith Radio called Search the Scriptures. The entire collection of lectures is available on podcast, and full collection provides the equivalent of a graduate degree in theology.

Review: I would highly recommend Thinking Orthodox for converts as well as cradle orthodox. The book not only explains what the Orthodox Phronema but how the Catholic and Protestant phronmena differs. Dr. Constantinou is an excellent teacher. The book is easy to understand but makes the reader think and want to further investigate. The book is also full of references for those who would like to read more. My copy is full of notes and highlights. Thank you Dr Jeanne for this book.

Title: A Clear Comparison of Christian World Views

Review: Thinking Orthodox offers the reader a sweeping insight to the nature of Eastern Orthodox thought and a comprehensive comparison to the prevalent mindsets behind Western Christianity, both Roman Catholic and Protestant. It serves as a compelling guide for anyone exploring Orthodoxy, those who have converted, and those born into the faith, all the while engendering insight and compassion among these viewpoints. The first 35 pages alone are worth the price of the book and the shift in perspective it affords.

Dr. Constantinou presents her teaching in a highly readable style that is satisfying to both academic and lay readers. Her voice is at once authoritative, but tempered with a gentle humility. We live in a time when the opinions and assumptions of the individual are considered primary, where truth has become arbitrary and personalized, and deductive reasoning is prized beyond those aspects of life that continually defy reasoning. Dr. Constantinou is not against science and rational thought, but puts them in a clear context of spiritual knowing that supersedes mere human intellect.

The strongest component of Dr. Constantinou’s book is her exposition of the relationship between the Holy Scriptures, Tradition, and the writings of the earliest founders of the Church in creating a distinctive Orthodox worldview. She is careful to point out the pitfalls of approaching these pillars of faith without proper respect and scholarship. She unfolds the path to finding confidence in our Orthodox beliefs through an understanding and reliance upon a way of thinking that has withstood the assaults of historical, political, and cultural change. She sets a firm foundation upon which we can continue to grow in faith, love, and understanding without falling prey to idle speculation or adherence to the plethora of isms that have plagued the history of Christianity.

For anyone seeking to wed his or her mind and heart to Christ in His Church, this volume is an invaluable resource.

Review: Without question, this is a book that I believe would be an excellent gift to a newly baptized Orthodox believer, as well as anyone seriously interested in the Orthodox faith.

From the very first chapter until the last, she unpacks the faith that provides the tools for obtaining an Orthodox phronema in a way that is remarkably understandable. It is a rare gift.

This most certainly is a book I plan on re-reading again and again.

Review: No other book I have ever read does a better job in explaining how Orthodoxy is different than all other Christian faiths and why this is so. It also in forms the the reader how he or she can work to acquire the Orthodox phronema if it is desired. The research reflected within this book is absolutely amazing.

Review: Dr. Jeanie’s writing is both thorough and engaging. She does a masterful job of discussing how an Eastern Orthodox Christian’s approach to Christian spirituality differs from Roman Catholic and Protestant approaches in the west. She draws from the Church Fathers (past and recent), Tradition, History, and the Holy Scriptures. Excellent book for newly (adult) baptized Orthodox Christians or cradle Orthodox Christians.
